    Clipped direct

The beams are painted white / many years of lime wash. Painting over the cables hides them quite nicely. Conduit would stick out more and make them more noticable. Just wanted to know if they have to be in conduit for the regs, as I was informed they do, but doubted the advice. Cheers

    Clipped direct

Hi folks, Is it OK to clip the ring main to exposed beams? The property is a very old farm cottage which has exposed beams. The idea was to clip the wires to the beams and then paint over them. This is how the old wiring was attached. I've been told that all wiring, even exposed...

    Leaking radiators and boiler

The ball valve in the header tank wasn't shutting off, resulting in the overflow dripping. When I want into the loft, it was clear that there was hot water in the header from the steam coming off it. Also, the rafters above were damp and had white mold type stuff on them, so it may have been...

    Leaking radiators and boiler

I've put in Fernox, followed by 2 lots of Wickes own stuff. The system was overpumping, as the header was very full and lots of steam coming out the header (I delt with this a few weeks ago). I know there was sludge, as I've gradually been changing radiators for newer ones as I've been...

I've had a chap round today who says my heat exchanger has rusted through. Is this normal for a 5 year old boiler?

    Leaking radiators and boiler

I haven't drained the entire system. I usually turn off the rads before draining down, so they will remain full. The water usually ran fairly clear, although was was sludge in the bottom of a couple of rads.

    Leaking radiators and boiler

Help! Over the last couple of weeks, I've had 2 radiators develop pin hole leaks. I've just discovered that the back boiler is now leaking (wet carpet under the fire). The boiler is a glow-worm and is only 4 years old. The heating system uses a header tank in the loft and cylinder in...

    Header Tank advice

Hi there, I need to put a new valve on the header tank of our central heating, as it won't shut off fully. Have just ventured into the loft and noticed that the water in the header tank is hot. Steam is coming out of it, making the rafters above it damp. Looks like it's been this way for...

    New shower time

Our shower has packed up (a Gainsborough 9.5KW), so time for a new one. Just a couple of questions - - Any recommendations on which make to buy? I hear Mira are good? - As it's a straight swap, I don't really want to go ripping tiles off the wall to alter plumbing. Both the cable and...

Wiring help with new room stat

Hi there, I've decided to replace my Honeywell T6160B room stat with a new Drayton Digistat +3 (battery powered one). Problem is, I can't figure the wiring out...... It's connected to a Potterton EP3000 programmer, which I do not have the instruction book for. Any ideas how to...

    New boiler

I'm looking into getting a new boiler fitted, as the current one is on its last legs (an old back boiler). I've got a standard 3 bed 1930's semi, solid 9" walls, loft insulation and double glazing (an online calculator says I need 22kW output). I'm thinking about getting a Greenstar 27CDi...

    TV Aerial cable

Thanks for the advice. So far, I split the cable using junction boxes! Not the best idea in the world (hence now doing it properly)! I've got a 4 way amplifier and intend to have 4 tv points, so thats fine. I was just a little confused with the cable, as some says its for sky etc, but...

    TV Aerial cable

Anyone know where I can get some good quality TV aerial cable? I have put an extension lead under the floor, with some branches off for 4 connection points along the route. Problem is now, even with a booster, the picture keeps breaking up. It was fine before I cut the lead up and put...
