    PU Foam and T&E cable

My reserve solution was going to be plaster but maybe a weak sand/cement mix would be better and even easier - drying time is not an issue. Not as quick & easy as foam though... :( I'm still a bit curious because there are many posts saying keep expanding foam away from wiring - but there...

    PU Foam and T&E cable

Exactly so. I am just dealing with holes in the brickwork as the cables go through the wall: I just want to seal them so a few cm of foam is all that is needed - I didn't think that this will have a major effect on heating and mean the cables need derating. I am more worried about reports I...

    PU Foam and T&E cable

I have read some info that standard PU foam is not compatible with PVC-insulated cable; and elsewhere contradictions that intumescent foam IS and IS NOT compatible. Anyone shed any light on this subject? I need to seal as best I can where cables go through some fairly big holes in the wall...

Acoustic insulation between ground and first floor.

I am looking for the best low-cost solution (if that's not a contradiction) to improve the acoustic insulation between the kitchen and our bedroom above. Any suggestions? At the moment there is just 12.5mm plasterboard (taped and filled, not skimmed with plaster) the joists (175x75mm) and...

    Copper Corrosion on incoming main

That's good advice. I have made some tests for earth leakage currents and not found any yet. But I do intend to bond across the water softener anyway; the lack of bonding only occurred to me after reading posts in this forum yesterday. Ironically, if lack of bonding has contributed to our...

    1930 Bungalow re-furb - lots to do

Have a good read about asbestos dangers and how to deal with it, or who to get in, before you disturb it. Often not dangerous if you don't touch it, but worth taking care if you have to.

    Copper Corrosion on incoming main

No, not steel. There was lots of steel in the CH system when we moved in - leaked all over the place as it was soldered together with copper fittings (yes, true) but all the steel is gone now.

    Copper Corrosion on incoming main

Thanks mfarrow, Hmmm could be though doesn't sound exactly right. the article mentions turulance as the main cause: the service valve is in a straight run and as it's usually open I wouldn't have thought there would be much turbulence there. There are several elbows in the area, which would...

    Copper Corrosion on incoming main

Today our incoming water main sprung a leak, fortunately discovered quite quickly and fortunaterly just to the house side of the service valve. When I disassembled the leaking compression joint, I found the copper inside the fitting to be corroded away, and more corrosion just outside which had...

Relining a ceiling - direction of joists

I wasn't going to use foam on its own, but as extra support. I normally use closer than 8 inch spacing along the joists but as the joists are 600mm (24") spacing I thought there might be some sag. I will be coving to give some support at the edges; and will use 12.5mm board.

Relining a ceiling - direction of joists

I need to reline a ceiling because the surface - previously covered in polystyrene tiles - is so bad. The shape of the room, hallway, would suit laying the boards long edge along the joists. Not the best way to do it but I wonder if anyone has any advice? Should I go ahead or just accept more...

    Do Tilers Use Tile Levellers?

"When prepping your floor for tile trade your level for a straight edge. Don’t be concerned with how level your floor is, be concerned with how flat it is." ;-) Anyone know a website that specifies the required flatness for a given size of tile? (or has a comment on the so-called levelling...

    Do Tilers Use Tile Levellers?

I too have been looking at the promo videos, and reading reviews - a bit mixed to say the least. I am quite experienced (as a non-pro) and am about to lay about 12 sq m of floor tiles - 400mm square which is larger format than I am used to; I have layed a lot of tiles around 300mm square. My...

    Relaying parquet flooring

I want to relay some damaged parquet flooring. I have some matching wood bocks, but am wondering what adhesive to use nowadays. The existing floor is glued down with a bitumin-type adhesive, I assume there is a modern equivaent? What should I use? If it is relavent, the blocks are about...

    Oil pipe in the floor

Thanks, that's more like what I thought. I was hoping to use the flexible plastic conduit so that sounds perfect. My engineer also recomended a separate conduit for the fire valve in case of replacement.. Is there a specific minimum depth I need to meet? I did find some posts about Gas that...

    Oil pipe in the floor

I want to replace my oil pipe which goes about 2m under the kitchen floor before going out the house. It is unprotected copper and since my cold water pipe burst under the floor recently (also unprotected copper) I thought I would replace the oil line before it too corrodes away. My OFTEC...

Bosch WFT 2800 Washer not filling correctly

Our Bosch WFT2800GB stops regularly near the start of the main wash, or during the rinse. It shows the error "PREWASH - ANTCREASE - 3" which is described in the manual as: "Water tap not open or blocked inlet filter". It is definately not the filters, as I tried running without them, and the...

    PC to TV help please.

Sorry if this first comment is too basic... you'll also need to switch the output on which is typically "Function-F7" which will cycle from laptop only to laptop+external to external only. You might find it problematical on laptop+external since the resolutions are unlikely to match; various...
