    Fixing tiles of differing thickness

The walls of my shower are being tiled, and we have two types of tile. The main one is about 10mm thick, then every so often there is a strip of a smaller mosaic tile about 7mm thick. Am I being unreasonable in expecting them all to be fixed such that their surfaces are flush, i.e. the adhesive...

    Tiling around curved shower tray

That's disappointing but thanks a lot for all of your comments.

    Tiling around curved shower tray

Thanks for the info - I thought there must be a way but the (pro) guy I have asked to do it reckons he won't be able to cut it neat enough and will have to add a 'trim', which in my opinion would ruin the look of what is quite a smart tray. Is this what you would do or do you just grout/silicone...

    Tiling around curved shower tray

Surely there must be an easy way, or even a difficult way, to fit tiles neatly around a quadrant? It must have been done so many times. Is it better to cut with a saw freehand, or use small straight cuts somehow? Tiles in question are 40cm x 40cm and about 6mm thick. I would have put them...

Drying time for cement under shower tray

Thanks very much, I'll play it safe and give it 7 days (even though I'm not quite 30 stone).

Drying time for cement under shower tray

I've just bedded in an acrylic shower tray onto WBP with a weak cement mix, as per the tray manufacturer's instructions, but I'm not sure how long the cement will take to set so I can stand on it - anyone know? Given that there's no air under there (hopefully!) I would guess it takes a few days.

    How tricky is solvent weld?

Not quite sure what happened there, but thanks all for your prompt help. I am reassured. Said joint will be stuffed behind skirting from tomorrow, so fingers crossed!

    How tricky is solvent weld?

I have just lost my solvent weld virginity, and although I followed the instructions on the solvent tin, I am a bit nervous as it states: a) use solvent liberally but without puddling b) cement within 15 seconds of priming c) use an applicator half the diameter of the pipe Well, I did all...

    flexible tap connectors

Thanks a lot, I'll give it a go with the sandpaper and see how I get on.

    flexible tap connectors

I have similar connectors with a monobloc I have just bought. Would it be safer to use a fitting with compression at one end and BSP male at the other, and connect the flexi to that? Or would that also need filing?

    Drilling joist for waste pipe

Thanks for the replies, I'll have to bite the bullet I think. Given the short span it should be ok, I'll add some extra support too. Keep an eye out for me in the DIY Disasters forum.

    Drilling joist for waste pipe

I have to pass a 40mm pipe through a 6" by 4" floor joist (not a regular joist, but at 90 degrees to the main floor joists, I think it is supporting the hearth or chimney in an adjoining room). The hole would be very near one end of the joist and roughly centred top-to-bottom. Do I need to...

    Tiling over underfloor heating

Thanks - do you mean that the skim should set before the notched layer is put on?

    Tiling over underfloor heating

Has anyone experience of putting down tile adhesive straight on top of electric underfloor heating? The UFH manufacturer says I can bury the cable in adhesive then tile as normal, but I'm not sure how this would work. Is the cable buried in a solid bed of adhesive, then add more adhesive and use...

Tile before or after attaching shower cubicle to wall

Appreciate your concern. Tanking is on the agenda. Can't vouch for the grout cleaning but point taken anyway.

Tile before or after attaching shower cubicle to wall

Thanks for all your opinions, seems there is no one best way. I suppose one reason I wouldn't tile first is that the tiles are quite small (about 6 x 6cm) and I would be worried they would crack when drilled. On the other hand, I think it would look better. Ah well, will have to do what I...

Tile before or after attaching shower cubicle to wall

I have seen conflicting views on tiling a shower cubicle where the walls around the shower are not to be tiled. Some say install the shower then tile inside, others say tile the wall then install the shower on top. The former sounds easiest, the latter may look a bit odd as the tiled area will...

    Reducing height of floor joists

Thanks, that's a great idea. How I wish I hadn't bought the 25mm already. Next time I will visit the forum first, then the shop.

    Reducing height of floor joists

I'm laying a new bathroom floor - 25mm wbp on wooden joists - then I will be tiling over. I have all the usual problems - floor height will be raised, joists are not level and not all joists have horizontal top surfaces. I wondered if I can use a circular saw to take up to 5mm off the top of the...
