Comment by building inspector for warm deck roof

We're building a GF bedroom extension (single storey). We have created a warm deck roof with 120mm celotex and then GRP over the top of the structural deck. As the room is for an elderly parent, I was thinking of adding further insulation (rockwool) in between the 400mm centre ceiling joists...

    Screed v concrete

Thanks. I guess the screed I've seen crumbles quite easily on temporary door thresholds etc as workmen go in and out.

    Screed v concrete

I'm trying to understand the reason people use screed instead of concrete for a floor. What impact does wet UFH have on the choice of either (I know it is screed that is used but want to understand why). Screed seems to brittle v concrete.

Wouldn't mind hearing your response on here though since the topic started. :)

Does it record sound too? Your mention of Surveillance Station got my curious, what is the reason for using this when Hikvision have their own recording hub? I think googled it and came across this video in the link below. Is is simply because you can use different IP cameras with the NAS and...

    Island worktop size

Am I right in thinking that if I'm only having drawers in the island then I won't be able to have sockets at each of the short ends because there is no cavity to install the back box into unlike cupboards?

For the poor cupboards below or the workers installing it?

    Island worktop size

I'm told we can get that from one slab. One of the reasons why I wanted to reduce it from 4m to 3m.

    Island worktop size

I'm probably going to also go for 7x Hikvision for my external but was not planning to put any internal cameras in. How do you rate Hikvision? Doesn't the kitchen camera put the family off? Do you have them installed elsewhere internally?

    Island worktop size

It looks about 140cm wide, but depth looks about 60cm on the cupboard and 100cm on the worktop? I agree fully about your comment on the social space between the island and the cupboard. The more women we can keep "that side of the kitchen" the better eh? Out of interest what dome camera you...

    Island worktop size

We were told 1m was more than enough space to leave around the sides of the island, but we felt that was a little tight and opted for 1.15m. Any more and it would have eaten into the open plan living room space and more importantly result in people walking into the back side of the island as we...

    Island worktop size

I'm having to fight to get the wife to agree to reduce this from 4m by 1.2m as we have an open plan living room and kitchen. What are the usual island size widths and lengths?

    Island worktop size

Could someone please confirm if there is a lip on a kitchen worktop island? My island will be 3m x 1.2m and I was wondering if I need to account for a slightly wider and deeper measurement in my room space even if only for a few cm as I'm trying to avoid coming more into the doorway line from...

    OSB3

Ok thanks didnt know that. Why is that? I thought if it was used for structural decking on flat roofs it could be used internally as it looked pretty strong. 18mm ply is stronger?

    OSB3

Is it ok to use OSB3 18mm for internal structural flooring directly on top of floor joists instead of 18mm ply? Is there any downside to using OSB3 internally?

Grenfell fire - how safe is Kingspan, Celotex and Quinn insulation

Yup, all valid points. I guess irrespective of those points though, they are still going to be used. Will be interesting to see how things change from a building regs perspective going forward and how manufacturers adapt.

Grenfell fire - how safe is Kingspan, Celotex and Quinn insulation

You have a point, but there are also gas pipes that could explode but that doesnt change the fact that if certain products made of polyethylene or whatever other plasticy type stuff that is going to burn and give off toxic gasses or combust like that, should it still be used. How is this any...

Grenfell fire - how safe is Kingspan, Celotex and Quinn insulation

Yes I read the other thread you refer to but started this one as I felt it deserved its own subject as it related to the particular product. The fact of the matter is, these products are still made of combustible material. Perhaps there is nothing else on the market that is fire resistant, but...

Grenfell fire - how safe is Kingspan, Celotex and Quinn insulation

Given the recent fire, I spoke to a couple of the above rigid board insulation manufacturers only to be told that their products are combustible but have fire certificates. Whilst these products will be contained within the cavity walls or behind plasterboard, should this still be an issue for...

Max 2.5m height outbuilding within 2m of boundary

Understood. Wouldn't there be damp issues, esp if in clay soil areas, even if DPM etc is used?
