Building a rather large wall by side of the road

Not read this whole thread so this may have already been asked but if the OP was so concerned but this wall behind constructed why did he wait until it was pretty much completed before calling the council? You can't tell me that wall was put up in an afternoon. Why wait until all that money...

Building a rather large wall by side of the road

If no scaffold was used and it was built overhand then the though of the risk to people passing underneath from falling items/materials makes me shudder! Poe

Raised floor bed!!! It's meant to read flower bed. One day I'll learn how to check my spelling!

What drainage for 2ft raised bed

Hi, Putting in a raised floor bed, it's approx 12m in length and 55cm in hight. Constructed from concrete blocks laid on their flat. I was going to run perforated land drain 60mm or 80mm behind it. But would this be worth it given the hight and width of the wall. Would rubble and 10mm clean...

Loft Conversion advice. Purlin strut removal.

The wall is single skinned. I wasn't planning on building the wall higher (with bricks). I was think of two ways to fix the new joists here. One would be to sit the joists on top of the existing spine timber wall plate using longer timbers to form an overlap and sister the overlapping ends...

Loft Conversion advice. Purlin strut removal.

Ha, ha, I didn't it again we both posted at the same time. Both with the same idea. The wall is brick, but I will need to check a few more areas to be sure as it's an ex council property and they could have made up the courses with whatever they had. Poe

Loft Conversion advice. Purlin strut removal.

Thanks SpaceWorm, Can remember how I worked out the joist size as it was a while ago but I came out with 10x2 timber minimum. I would be putting extra loads through the spine wall as the new floors would be wall plated to the sides of it. Cheers Poe.

Loft Conversion advice. Purlin strut removal.

Would 8x2 joists not be on the small side for a 4200 span? I have 2700 from the top of the ceiling joists to the underside of the ridge. The roof trusses are 3x2" so will need beefing up for the insulation and air gap. I would guess that with leaving the purlins in and making the trusses deeper...

RonnyRaygun, Sorry I'm a bit behind your posts, you seem to be posting as I'm still responding to your earlier ones. But yes you have got my idea.

Loft Conversion advice. Purlin strut removal.

Pillsbury, Exactly my thoughts to much work out there now to bother with smaller jobs. Ronny Raygun, The reason I mentioned flitch and rsj beams is originally I was going the more traditional route with dwarf purlin walls running the full length and may still require this but looking at it I...

Loft Conversion advice. Purlin strut removal.

Sorry I thought I had attached all the images but clearly not. The spans of the joist would be 3450 and 4120. What I'm an proposing would be to put in the joists and using these and the existing spine wall plate build a structural stud wall to support the top two purlins. The bottom purlin...

Loft Conversion advice. Purlin strut removal.

Hi all, I've asked for advice previously both here and on Screwfix forum so sorry to be bothering you again. I have been in contact with two structural engineering companies who (after contacting numerous others with no interest or response) have promised to get back to me with quotes but both...

Help pricing a feather board fencing job

Thanks for the reply. Your probably faster than me, I was thinking 2 or 3 days, just struggling to visualise the work. There will be other repairs no doubt so I'm going to go with 3 days. Cheers, Poe.

Help pricing a feather board fencing job

Hi all, Been asked to replace 24 meters of feather board fencing (6 foot boards). Posts and rails to remain. It's been a while since I've done much fencing so need to be sure my labour charge is not to far off. Remove old boards and replace with new. Cheers.

    Help please!

Thank you for replying. Well it's my second time of complaining to them. I complained when it first got delivered as I thought it was light, a builder over the road also said I'd be lucky if it was 5 tonne. I have measured and remeasured a hundred times and put it into the calculators. I just...

    Help please!

Ticket says 10 tonne hand written not printed. The trench is 19m X 30cm X 50cm Plus a little for the pier areas When I put all that info (properly measured) into online calculators these are telling me it would need 5 - 6 tonne depending on the site used. Even at the 2.4 tonne per M3 I'm still...

    Help please!

I'm having a dispute with my local aggregate supplier. I ordered 10 tonne of all in ballast to mix my own concrete for a foundation. I started mixing one section of foundation this required 3m3 of concrete yet I have used all 10 tonne that was delivered. I worked out it would only require...

Piers in flat concrete block wall

The wall will be 6 foot in hight. Would rather the piers to on the outer face especially if the piers will be full blocks laid flat sized. Smaller piers wouldn't be so bad which is why I thought my idea of a block upright either side followed by two courses of block on their flat across the top...
