    Downlighters, regulations etc....

...as long as my house is of the same construction as used in the TRADA test, I won't need firehoods. Can anyone find that detail for me please?

    Make Up Of Consumer Unit

Out of interest did you discuss this? Even with your best attempt at leaving them with future capacity it might not be enough or might not help with the new BS (17th ed). If their future plans need more that you can provide then they'll be better off by biting the bullet now and moving the CU to...

Thanks a lot! I'll point him at that link and see what he has to say...

    The looks you get!!

Did they include a definition of 'safe'? It's years since I worked as a safety engineer, but its something along the lines of the risk of harm being below what is reasonably acceptable. The UK even had an acronym for it - ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable). The point is that it is...

    Downlighters, regulations etc....

I 'gently' challanged him and he is rigid on it. He insists that my ground floor ceilings have a 30 min modified fire resistance and that by cutting holes in it I will be degrading that resistance. I'm not sure where I stand on the issue right now. Part of me doesn't like to do it if I don't...

    Wall chasing & box sinkers

Thanks. How long does it take to chase 1m in plaster over block with that SDS cutter? Also what width/depth does it produce? What's the normal method for securing cables inside a chase prior to plastering? I need to make chases for a variety of cable (cat5e and coax as well as 2.5mm2 t&e).

    Downlighters, regulations etc....

I won't comment on the theme of 'fashion' because of course that is subjective. However I would agree with the sentiment that you should think carefully about why you want downlighters because they are a lot more effort and expense than other forms of lighting, and you need more to get the same...

    Wall chasing & box sinkers

After reading the comments on here about dust-storms with "proper" chasers, I decided to try out one of the alternatives. http://www.screwfix.com/prods/11900/Hand-Tools/Builders-Tools/Builders-Basics/Wall-Chaser I must say I'm rather impressed. The tool directs the bit underneath the top...

Getting tiles and laminated flooring the same level

My house has chipboard floors and I am having the bathrooms refitted. Since I want tiled floors in the bathrooms and since none of the chipboard is moisture-resistant, seems like replacing the floor with plywood before tiling (including electric underfloor heating) would be the best idea. I...

Need for underfloor heating + getting finished floors level

Thanks for the replies - seems you all agree that it is a good idea. Any comments on the levelling?

Need for underfloor heating + getting finished floors level

I'm in the middle of extending/renovating my house and plan to have three upstairs bathrooms tiled (walls and floor) and the other upstairs rooms floored with wood laminate. The floor joists are 400mm spaced and the floor is 20mm T&G chipboard. I was discussing this with a friend yesterday...

    C&K Securitech C023-203 iss.1 question

Yes I have the same system and had the same problem. The real issue is that if you have a power cut then the alarm will go inactive. As others have said you need to replace the battery.

    8-core alarm cable

Thanks for the suggestion. At the moment I think there are only three cables going upstairs - one for the landing PIR, one for a panic switch and the other for the bell box. I guess that I will add more, but I'm not sure that it'll be enough to make using a big multicore worthwhile - after all...

    low energy downlights

You haven't said which zone you want to put them. If zone 3 without water jets they will be OK. Otherwise you'll need IP rated versions.

Dichroic halogen lamps in fire-protection downlights

I did a bit more research and it seems that whilst some manufacturers state that you can use a dichroic in their fire-protected downlighters, they do advise against it. I also had some more technical advice that these infra-red coated halogens are more energy-efficient because the filament runs...

Dichroic halogen lamps in fire-protection downlights

I'm in the middle of a discussion with my LABC about fitting downlights. The surveyor has told me that "the first floor only requires to have a modified half hour fire resistance" and that to achieve this I might need to use fire hoods. My dilemma is that I really would like to use the...

    Notches and holes in joists

Thanks. In fact I did contact my LABC inspector and he told me that the guidelines had been removed from the 2004 edition because they are covered in the reference to the TRADA (Timber Research And Development Association) tables. It also appears that the electrician who wired my house didn't...

    Notches and holes in joists

I see that in approved doc A 1992 there is clear guidance on cutting notches and drilling holes in joists. But in the 2004 version there seems to be no guidance at all. Is this something that I need to discuss with my LABC directly?

    8-core alarm cable

What is it used for? The reason I ask is that I think I may well run cables for a new alarm system before I decide exactly what to fit. I have a couple of reels of 6-core cable, but am wondering if this is enough?
