After reading the comments on here about dust-storms with "proper" chasers, I decided to try out one of the alternatives.

I must say I'm rather impressed. The tool directs the bit underneath the top layer of plaster so that the debris goes straight down to the floor instead of into the air.

However it does look like it would take a bit of time to do a lot of chasing, and although I only want to be chasing in my own house, I'm wondering if there are any faster tools.

I'm an SDS-virgin so have been reading up about the chisel-action on these drills with interest. Now I have seen the following bits:

Are either of these any good?

On the subject of box-sinking, are the tools you can buy any good? They seem to cost over £100 so I am hesitant to buy one without knowing.

There's been a lot of discussion on chasing walls have a look at this:

wall chasers

I use an electric chaser on unoccupied houses and full rewires but you need a good vacuum cleaner for dust extraction.

For chases on occupied houses I use a sds channel cutter with one of those wheeled guides. This only for extra sockets or relocating of accessories.

As for box sinkers - not worth it - they'll work on breeze and celcon blocks (then a pen knife would do the same) they won't work on hard brick.

Thanks. How long does it take to chase 1m in plaster over block with that SDS cutter? Also what width/depth does it produce?

What's the normal method for securing cables inside a chase prior to plastering? I need to make chases for a variety of cable (cat5e and coax as well as 2.5mm2 t&e).
