Best way to seal around a floor joist?

Hi guys. I keep getting the smell of the neighbours cooking in my back bedroom. Today it was really bad burnt toast that stunk the room out. The room is in the process of being renovated so the floorboards are up. There are naturally gaps between the joists and the brickwork, im guessing that...

Silicone joint between slabs and woods

Hi guys, I have a wood border surrounding my patio. I have re-laid the patio and slabbed it all. I was going to simply grout between the slabs and the wooden borders however I have realised the grout will likely crack with any slight movement of the wood, expansion/contraction etc. Is there a...

    Crack free timber sealant?

Hi guys, i am in the middle of building a timber structure in the garden with a fold out roof. I am after a sealer to fill the gap between 2 pieces of wood to stop water getting in. The is a lot of weight on and off the top piece so there is constant movement and flexing of the wood. I tried a...

What is this locking mechanism called?

Hi guys Please take a look at the attached image. Does anybody know what type of mechanism this is or what it is called? its one of those where you can lock a swing arm at 90 degrees in either direction. You release it by pulling the pin and, when the pin glides over the next hole it springs...

    Where to measure height from?

Hi guys. My garden steps up towards the rear, only around 150 mm. This step up is artificial and was build by us last year. On this step i want to build a carport style canopy, however the height is very important and must be exact. It is up to the boundary so the build can only be 2.5m tall...

Using fence posts instead of structural posts?

Thank you. One side and one end will be shielded by neighbours fences for about 2/3 of the height. At the other end the posts will be sitting flat to my concrete garage. I may bolt the posts to the garage to add extra support.

Using fence posts instead of structural posts?

Hi Guys, I am about to embark on constructing a car port style structure to house a golf simulator in the back garden. It will basically be x4 upright posts with a flat roof (timber joists with bitumen sheets). The size will be 2.8m high, 6m long and 3m wide. Now I know this is a silly...

Ok mate, youre one of them guys are you? That was a different question based on your answer suggesting the only issue with what i said is the squaring of the joints. I didnt ask if i can flatten it by clamping it to a bench for a few days, i asked if i can clamp it square in order to get it...

    Straightening warped/twisted wood?

Ive been thinking, the cross pieces should pull the twist out when connected to the opposing upright. The only question is, will a tenon 15mm thick x 40mm long be strong enough to hold 5mm of twist without breaking? Alternatively if there is considerable risk that it wont be strong enough...

    Straightening warped/twisted wood?

So if the bend is 5mm, do you mean bend 2.5mm the other way? Or 7.5mm? Any advice on how id do this with a twisted piece of wood? I will be joining using mortise and tenon joints. The doors will be shaker type doors, so each door will consist of an upright each side joined by 5 cross members...

    Straightening warped/twisted wood?

Hi guys, So i was quoted £1600 for a set of bespoke solid oak french doors. I decided to have a go myself at making them to save money (the wood cost £350). i have a fair bit of woodworking experience so im confident i can do them. The problem i have is the wood for the uprights is warped...

Can you fit a multi point lock to rebated door pairs?

Hi guys. Im about to make a door pair (timber) that has the rebate where the doors meet, to avoid the gap and resulting draft down the middle. The doors will be 44mm thick, so i was going to do the rebate 12mm by half the door thickness, so 12mm x 22mm. I wanted to fit a multi point lock. The...

    Ceiling crack appeared again

Hi guys. I posted a few weeks back, i had a couple of cracks appear in my freshly plastered ceiling at joins in the plasterboard. The cracks were moving when i pressed against them, so i put more screws in and the movement stopped. The span of plasterboard is only about a meter as it is in...

    Painting over easi-fill

Hi guys. So i filled defects in fresh plaster with easi-fill and sanded. Ive mist coated over the plaster and done another coat of standard white emulsion however the spots where i have easi-filled are really showing through the plaster. It isnt the filler so much, it is more the are around...

    Cracks in plaster re-appearing

Thanks guys. There was indeed movement when i pushed along the cracks. Added a load more screws and it appears to have pulled the plasterboard closer to the joist (when i screwed them in the joint cracked a lot more). No movement now. Filled just needs to be sanded. Thanks again
