Best for DIY maintenance and spares availability?

Hi, My Hotpoint WM13P has packed in after 13 years without a single problem. I have spent ages looking at reviews with regard to a replacement. Nothing stands out but the concensus on the Forum seems to be "you get what you pay for". Well I can't afford a Miele. So looking at the other end of...

Relative height --- F&E and cold water tank

I am moving my cold supply tank into the loft alongside the F & E tank. Does the F&E tank (or free water level?) have to be higher than the cold water feed tank? Thanks Mike

    Hotpoint WM13P --- eccentric drum?

My Hotpoint WM13P bought about 13 year ago is making a banging (that has got progressively worse) when on spin. Even with nothing in the drum it still makes a "womp-womp" sound (like banging without the bang) :? The concrete damping is fixed tightly but the 2 springs restraining top of the...

Need I use sealant on plumbing joints?

Is it necessary to add sealing stuff to plumbing joints or is it just "belt and braces" for us amateurs. I have used ptfe tape on screw fittings but do I need sealant on the cold water feed from the header tank and should I use anything extra on the olives of compression fittings? Thanks Mike

    Hot Water 28mm then 22mm then 15mm

I have 3 hot taps (bath, sink, kitchen sink) all connected to 15mm pipes. The cold water is fed to the cylinder on a 28mm pipe. The hot water from the cylinder is on a 22mm pipe. How are the taps connected to this pipe? All but the last one must be Teed off the 22mm pipe. I take it that under...

Do I bite the bullet and go for a Combi?

Thanks all for the information. I'll have a DIY go at moving the tanks (hopefully for less than £50) and then review the situation on the cylinder. Cheers Mike

Do I bite the bullet and go for a Combi?

My boiler is a GlowWorm SpaceSaver 50 and could be up to 25 years old. The Corgi guy who serviced it last year said that they are good boilers. Unfortunately the corroded connections are round the back of the cylinder and I can't get to them for a photo (found it by feel when I was putting on...

Do I bite the bullet and go for a Combi?

I currently have a gravity hot water system and pumped central heating fed from a conventional boiler. The galvanised water tank is in the airing cupboard above the hot water cylinder. The tank is quite old and might begin to leak. I’ve got a new plastic tank from my neighbour. I plan to use it...

    Ford Focus --- Shocks replacement

Thanks for the replies. I realised about the dangers of compressed springs and I would definitely buy the proper compression tools as recommended by Stivino. Thanks

    Ford Focus --- Shocks replacement

My car is a Focus 1.6 hatchback 2002 model about 65000 miles. How easy is it to change the shocks. According to the Haynes Manual the rears are a "2 Spanner" job but the fronts are a "3 Spanner". I guess this is because the spring is integral. Any pitfalls? Any bits to hit with a big hammer...

    Replacing Ford Focus Brake Discs

Ordered brake discs from www.JustPartsBiz.co.uk on Sunday afternoon arrived Tuesday. They were Mintex. Total cost including VAT and postage £47. Fitted them Thursday morning in about 3 hours. There were no retaining springs on the discs and the left front came off no problem. The right was a...

    Replacing Ford Focus Brake Discs

Hi, I have just ordered some replacement discs as the MOT is due and I got a warning last time. The Haynes Manual says its relatively easy. Although removing the spring washers will be a pain (it always is). Any tips or pitfalls to avoid? Thanks Mike

    My nightmare with wall plugs

My daughters house was probably built pre-war. The plaster on the walls is like chalk and the bricks underneath are like steel. Drilling a hole for a fixing is a nightmare. You get a neat hole in the plaster, the drill hits the brick and wanders all over the wall. And if you do get a decent...

Which is family saloon is cheapest to service?

Hi, If I bought a family saloon from new and got it garage serviced to 100,000 miles. Which would be cheapest in replacement service parts? Eg oil and air filters, brake pads, spark plugs, cam belts etc. Second question. Which would be the easiest to service myself (competent amateur...

    Cavity wall insulating quandary

Hi, A young lady has just advised me that I could get a grant for cavity wall insulation on my semi and it would only cost me £150. I have a few questions. From my school Physics I thought that “air” had one of the best thermal insulation properties. So why fill up the air gap in the...

    Routing Tank Overflows

I am moving the central heating header tank to a different position in the loft and am moving the hot water tank from the airing cupboard to the loft. Both side by side. Can I take the overflows from both tanks into a home made device like a “funnel” and connect this to the pipe that currently...

    Poly v Copper fittings?

Apologese if this has been asked several times before but I am new to the Forum. I am going to replace my old galvanized tank with a new plastic tank and move it out of the top of the airing cupboard up into the attic. I would prefer to use plastic pipe and fittings but am worried about the...
