Cleaned PC now it does not work!

Hi tilerman, If all you want is to reterive files from the hard disk, I'd be tempted to go out and get a USB HDD enclosure. You will need one big enough to take a desktop HDD, so 3.5 inch rather than 2.5 inch, and with an interface to match your old hard disk. If it's coming from an older PC...

    NEW PC + ISP + ROUTER MUST I WAIT & WAIT & WAIT &amp

Yes, sounds like a plan - one supplied by TalkTalk should have at least some of the setting pre-configured for you, my BT one did. One option you could consider is to use the Onetel USB modem with the new machine (ideally only short-term, as they aren't particularly secure). A quick Google...

    NEW PC + ISP + ROUTER MUST I WAIT & WAIT & WAIT &amp

Hi Nice, I hate to bring you bad news, but looking at the Belkin N1, it looks as though it is a router designed to get it's "internet connection" via a RJ45 network socket, hooked to an external, seperate modem. The old modem that Onetel supplied has (correct me if I'm wrong) a USB...

    NEW PC + ISP + ROUTER MUST I WAIT & WAIT & WAIT &amp

Basically, in the router's setup pages, it will ask you for the account name and password for your ISP, so the router is able to make the connection. There's some info relating to TalkTalk here; http://www.talktalk.co.uk/help/questions/TEC_01_37 If you google your current ISP, they...

    NEW PC + ISP + ROUTER MUST I WAIT & WAIT & WAIT &amp

Hello! Given that you've got broadband comming into the house already, I'd say there is no reason you can't hook up your new computer and router to use your existing broadband, and then on change-over date, just change the relevant bit to match the new broadband service :) I'd suggest...

    NEW PC + ISP + ROUTER MUST I WAIT & WAIT & WAIT &amp

Hi Nice, Congrats on the new PC, to try and help you out, I think we need a bit more info; 1. Do you have a broad band connection comming into the house at present, or is the old ISP providing you with dial-up and the new one will be providing you with broad band? 2. It sounds as though...

Nice easy "what is it question"

Hi all, Thanks for the responses, I did try to get a new one at B&Q, but as usual when you really need something they were out of stock.Having said that, I've tightened the existing one up, which I hope has fixed it... Thanks for the tips on different threads, I confidently expect to buy...

Nice easy "what is it question"

Hello all, Finding a leak in the rad pipework, I think I've traced it to the item shown in the pic below (hopefully). What I need to know is, what is it, and can I buy a replacement for the part at the very top with the screwdriver slot in? This screws down onto a thread protruding from...

Wiring Colours - Black, White & Green - which is neutral

Yes, I see your point, fair enough. Electrical wiring being reasonably recent, it makes you wonder why so many differences between countries, really.

Wiring Colours - Black, White & Green - which is neutral

How was that irrelavent information?! The first part related to the colour code that was asked about, the second to why you shouldn't fit a switch in the neutral wire, answering the second part of the OP's question...

Wiring Colours - Black, White & Green - which is neutral

Hi Athos, The standard in the US is; Green for earth / ground / CPC White for neutral Black for phase / live It is important to switch the phase line, so that when switched off, not only is the circuit broken, not part of the system after the switch is at a potential relavtive to...

    10 mm2 cable required

It's a reasonable question, but don't forget, it's likely to be difficult to make good quality joints in large, high current terminals. The terminals at either end of the run will be designed to make good contact with 10 mil (we have to assume), it is probable that they won't be able to grip...

    Glass for 1930's Door

It might be too new, but could be worth a call to any local architectural salvage yards. Otherwise, the local tip or replacement window companies may be pleased to get shot of some surplus doors that you could strip down for parts. Ditto any local builders you might know. FWIW :)

    Smoke detectors

Hello again, I'm looking to fit smoke detectors to my one bed flat, currently there is nothing installed at all... First I guess my question is, does anyone have any suggestions how many I need? My thoughts are three; living room, hall, bedroom. Should these be optical or ionization...

Fluorescent lights, which wattage to choose?

Hello everyone, Just a quick question... (hopefully!) I am looking to change the two light fitting in my kitchen (currently naff 1980's bar spotlight things, 3 60w bulbs on a bar, two bars in the room) to fluorescent tubes (two tubes, one at each end of the room). The kitchen is 3m by 2.5m...

Hotpoint WM 51 heater replacement. Where IS it...?

Hi Tockworth, thanks for the top information. I checked the heater (25 ohms) which seems OK. I'm not sure about the thermostat (about 13,000 ohms) To cut a long story short, I've replaced the machine now - wasn't keen to have to change the programmer.... Cheers again for the help. Colin

Hotpoint WM 51 heater replacement. Where IS it...?

Hi Folks, First time poster, long time lurker (mainly on electrics UK). The title says it all really. I am trying to check the heating element in one of the above. Machnine works, does not heat water - I'll check the element with a multi-meter for resistance and probably need to change...
