Ok so I went at the notch with a chisel and the whole bloody handle snapped off. I think the faceplate was rusted ontop of the fixing. I will have to get a replacement handle set now, and will probably spray with lubricant before installing! Thanks for your help!

thanks for the advice. it's definitely vinyl Matt as we have the paint cans that the previous owners used. luckily the walls are in good nick, with no peeling etc but we will slap on a bit and see how it looks in the morning.

ah great idea, I might not get the door dipped etc but I will sand back, stain, and then clear varnish it. I think I will just leave the really heavily glossed door as it is.

ok thanks for the tips. I will give it a go and try to sand it back down to remove the dark patches, and use some dark oak matt water based varnish on it! Cheers

it could well be some sort of filler. it's pretty stuck to the ceiling. I tried to knock a bit off and felt like it was going to take the ceiling off with it! I'll give it another go.

Thanks Smithy - I called them and they confirmed it should be capped off properly below floor level. I'm a bit suprised that the national grid would advise me to take the other option.... Anyone got a ballpark estimate for a gas safe engineer to do the work properly?

No he didnt locate the other end (would involve lifting up floorboards) - but his advice was to cut off and fill with foam!

Lifting up the floorboards will not be an easy job. If the Transco /national grid say its OK then I reckon i'm safe right?
