    Mould prevention on Ply

I made a little carry tote for some soldering gear, which I was a little proud of. It’s made mainly from ply, possibly OSB I think or board up ply. Anyway, I store it in my van which has ventilation in it, but for some reason I got some green mould growth on it recently. I cleaned most of it...

What have you been doing today?

After nigh on completly rebuilding our dilapidated garage which came with the dilapidated bungalow we bought four years ago. We've started sorting out the inside of it covering up the horrible blue paint. Mrs Chirpy likes OSB and it would provide a strong base for hanging the bikes I was...

    Battens?

My 10sqm.Conservatory is cold. The floor is tiled and it is about 8cm below the house floor, which is a bit awkward at my age. I don't think the 2 dwarf walls have cavity insulation as I am getting mould on the inside. I have put a small amount of Insulation on the outside walls covered with...

    Insulating summerhouse (during build)

Yes, just paint the cement board as you aren’t rendering, the joints will show, but that doesn’t matter. if you don’t use some form of sheathing then the building will be less resistant to lateral deflection from wind load - maybe metal strapping used diagonally at corners would be a solution.

    Garage Self Build

Mine cost about £3k. Its a bit smaller at 4m x 7m. That was doing everything myself. Using a mix of materials including from eBay, freecycle and Gumtree. Eg £40 for the garage doors, £10 for the pedestrian door, £10 for a lintel. It was approximately £1k for the base and foundations, £1k for the...

what "sheet" material should I make my Garden shed

Yep, that's why I bought the last one, but it was so flimsy with joints every 3' . After I lined it with 11mm OSB the saving was not that much in the end. Hmmm good point, only the front will be seen - I'll look into that, but I don't think I can get a 10'x8' plastic shed

    Rising damp fun

If you're getting the OSB for free then fine, you may find the garage starts smelling a bit damp (with all the water trapped beneath the DPM). For comfort you might to better with those interlocking soft tiles that appear occasionally in Halfords etc at £10 for 6- they'll just compress under...

Building a shed from scratch as a rookie: how realistic?

The cost of materials will be more than one of those super cheap sheds, the ones with 32mm x 32mm framework. However if you want a decent solid shed, one that is wind proof and rain proof then you will be able to build one much more cheaply. To achieve waterproof cladding, you are best to...

    Garden office build specs.

Hi there, Firstly I'm new to this forum, so apologies if I've not posted in the correct place etc. Any advice on the following would be much appreciated: I'm building a garden office 4.8w x 2.4d x 2.5h. The concrete base is already done (about 80mm on top of hardcore, mot and dpm, no sand...

    Shed walls leaking

Good morning guys this seems to be a relatively common problem. We bought a shed off the internet (Dunster House) had it delivered and I’ve assembled it on a solid base of mot and flags. Since assembling it we have had consistent problems with driven rain penetration, being in the North West we...

    Aluminium coping fixing

Hello, About to fix aluminium coping to my flat roof but want to get a few things answered before I do. If anyone can be any help that would be appreciated. 1. Where the render corner trim comes over the wall, the fixing bracket doesn’t sit level. Can I put a packer under the bracket to make...

Alternative suggestions to composite cladding, where walls won't be seen

Hi all. I'm planning a garden room/office which will be situated towards the corner of the outdoor space. It's a SIPs build with HouseWrap and battens as you'd expect. The front and right side elevations will be visible and clad with composite interlocked cladding, but the left and back won't be...

    Best temporary floor option

OSB will work, you can even paint it, to make it feel a bit nicer. When you are done you can use it for a shed or something. Couple of comments on the above. If you are insulating, make sure you have suitable ventilation in your void, to avoid your joists rotting. Also make sure they are...

    Basic shed lining

I bet you aren't a fan of spaghetti and chillis, are you? Or make your own pizza sauces, either My last shed had a "skin" of green roofing membrane fished out of the skips from a couple of jobs I was on. I applied a variety of insulated plasterboard and other insulation as available on the...

Shed insulation using celotex, cavity required?

Im looking to insulate my shed using celotex and just have a couple of questions in the hope of clearing up some contradictions I have discovered during research. My shed is pretty heavy duty, constructed out of 3x2 framing and 25mm T&G cladding. Ive read conflicting views about the...

    Insulating an industrial photography studio

Hi Guys and Gals, First post here so please be gentle. We have started renting our first workplace which is going to be a photography studio once we have decorated and things. The studio is situated on the top floor of an old Yorkshire steam textile mill and it is very industrial...

    Brick/block shed renovate

Thanks for the reply JohnD. There are no leaking gutters. I think the damp, of which there is little, comes from no DPC, so the damp is being brought in from the walls. I couldn't see myself digging up the floor and putting DPM down or retro fitting walls with DPC, hence why I mention the...

Liquid Acrylic Products for Flat Roof Refurb (not leak repair)

Thanks for the responses. To combine clarifications ..... 1) guessing here, but I'd say that solar load has baked out some the plasticity in the felt top layer, & wind has scoured the surface perhaps as there are .....er, scoured looking...... patches. There is a bit of cracking/crazing on...

Prep for Drylined walls prior to painting

Aquapanel, should be waterproof, I have been using this for several years now to form the insides of shower cubicles. You need to use the correct screws and the right sealant for edges and corners. Aquapanel seems to have the name all over the place but on different products. Some cut easily...

    Box profile sheeting vapour barrier

Steel buildings and the solutions for combatting condensation, are somewhat specialist. I've seen pre-insulated steel sheets with the (PIR) insulation bonded directly to the sheet and I've seen the rockwool/glass-wool sandwich version. No idea about the vapour barrier detailing though sorry...
