    Colour coding SWA question

Why does SWA cable have grey, black and brown cores compared to normal 2.5mm2 which has brown, blue and yellow/green? Sorry for the question but this is how we get to know and understand.

Tips on removing masonry nails from blockwork

Usually to do this I use a pry bar and hammer or a bonzai bar, but in cases like this where there is an aluminium bracket being held firmly against the wall it's tricky to know what to do without risk of blowing out the masonry from the face of the blockwork. I would like to avoid doing this as...

How much should this job be?

If I recall correctly the HSE have guidelines on DIY artex removal... See if you can find it. There are different types of asbestos and chrysotile is the least toxic of them all. I have removed a lot of my own artex as I was in the same predicament as you and I used X-TEX. It's a gel that is...

Lead paint test kits - your experiences

Hi everyone, I'm currently working on a room with what looks like very old paint which could contain lead. Out of curiosity I would like to know if it contains lead or not and I think my boss would be interested in having a chat about this as we both work closely together and often do wear...

    Fitting cleats question

So, this may sound like I'm over thinking the job but hear me out ... I've got 2.5mm2 SWA to run along a section of wall that is stone with cement render. Using SS screws and plugs I am going to fit the SWA to the render. Should I give any consideration to the fact that by using plugs and...

Finding a partnership - questions and advice wanted

All my experience has come from working on jobs and not at a training college. Yeah, it looks like your pointer friend has a good reputation and good people are always in demand. Although at the moment I'm not looking to take that full plunge into self employment just yet.

Finding a partnership - questions and advice wanted

Finishing is usually the hardest to get on because the fellow I work for likes to do it. It's that simple. I can finish but I'm not confident enough just yet. I should take on some small jobs of my own on the side for friends and family to really hone the finishing and then I suppose it would...

Finding a partnership - questions and advice wanted

Asking for advice : My long term ambition is to have my own business plastering and rendering. I really enjoy it as a job despite the graft. At the moment I am employed, working for a sole trader who is about 20 years my senior. As you have already pictured, this involves me doing a lot of...

Outside double socket install DIY question

I understand why you've asked that but no because it's not going onto a wall of the house. It's quite some way down the length of the garden

Outside double socket install DIY question

Hi all, I have plans to fit an outside double socket fed from the house consumer unit on a b16. I can't see needing much more power than the odd power tool or jet washer. The cable run will be about 15 metres from the consumer unit to the outside position with about 2 metres of that being inside...

Best fittings for CCTV signage to block work

Just to give a little context... I've decided to fit some signage as I've got CCTV over looking a public lane. I know the legislation regarding this and it is perfectly legal to film a public place. It is to prevent dog fouling and fly tipping...

Recommend a grommet/gland for hole in wall

As sparky says, the hole needs to be large enough to accommodate the cable ends. It was a faff to get these through even with 25mm

Recommend a grommet/gland for hole in wall

Recently fitted some CCTV and bore a one inch hole in blockwork for the cable as pictured. External wall is painted white. It would be useful to get some recommendations for what can be used to plug this hole. There are a few products on the market so I just want to hear from people that have...

Leak down the neck on a monobloc tap

Just for the purposes of continuity I used what I had available which was the plumbersmate and lined a whole sausage of it under the tap and slowly tightened creating a seal. There isn't much of a bearing for the tap itself once you take into account the size of the whole. One week on and no...
