Can I replace this rotten wood on a sash window

Ahh so they use putty to fix the pane of glass to the wood? I should check out some other videos to see what they do. It doesn't have a wood like texture and as you say I can see the wood underneath. I found a video and I'm confident now it's putty. Thank you very much. I have some linseed...

Can I replace this rotten wood on a sash window

Part of the wood on the exterior of a sash window is rotten and some is missing, as seen in the photo. I can remove more of it with my finger but I don't think the entire length (height) will come away easily. The wood looks to have encased the glass. I'd like to know if this is a quick fix...

    Decorative Victorian fireplace repair

Thanks. I guess then the more expensive alternative, to replace the whole lot, would ensure that it all fits and matches. Oh well :)

    Decorative Victorian fireplace repair

Hi All, We bought the house 2 years ago and I would like to sort out the decorative (non-functional) fireplace in the bedroom. The picture below shows that the hood is missing. I don't know whether it is a simple task of purchasing another hood or should I get a full replacement? The...

How best to tile around fire place between floor boards?

I would like to put some tiles on the photographed concrete. I presume that tiles once existed there. What's the best way to level out the floor as there are some divots in what's there currently? Then what's involved next, putting down some levelling material and then some adhesive for the tiles?

Stemball waste screw not long enough

I bought a replacement Mccalpine waste for my Rak belfast sink but the sink has a "bulge" underneath which means the threaded screw connector is not long enough to screw into the waste mechanism. I've seen another for sale but it's the same length so useless. Does anyone know whether these...

Wood burning stove - do I do it by the regs?

My wife really wants a wood burning stove for our Victorian terrace. Normally I would do things by the book but it is likely that the chimney has no liner or it has perished meaning a flue would be required and companies have quoted around £1500 for the flue alone. A mate suggested putting it...

Building shed on brick paving - advice please

Not sure. I suppose it won't hurt to dig down through a couple of them since the shed will sit on top. What should I be looking for being a novice and all? Ben

Building shed on brick paving - advice please

Hi all, I plan to put a shed in our garden. It's not a large garden but am planning on putting in a 7 foot by 8 foot shed which I will use as a gym, just weights and doesn't need to be very big. The part of the garden I plan to put the shed is a brick area. I'm hoping this avoids the need...

How to get speaker wire to in ceiling kitchen speakers?

Well I have kind of changed my mind (over night) on the closed back speakers which costs more and look at open backed speakers which offer more choice and lower cost. I was going to buy a fire hood which will offer some sound cancellation and look to fill the hood with a material that will...

How to get speaker wire to in ceiling kitchen speakers?

Hi Chris, Thanks for the idea about the LEDs. The electrician is a fan and mentioned aurora and a retrofit option. Not clued up on lights so will call him tomorrow. With 18 lights in the kitchen I need to make sure the cost can be recouped in two years... With regards to the speakers I...

How to get speaker wire to in ceiling kitchen speakers?

Thanks for the tips. I had planned to fit a hoody for the speakers but I guess you mean a fire hood for the lights? I actually have an electrician coming over next week to complete some work that he said needed doing after an inspection of the electrics (just bought the house). I'll ask him as...

How to get speaker wire to in ceiling kitchen speakers?

Hi all, After much thought I have decided it's best to replace my Sonos Play 5 with a spare Connect:Amp and some in-ceiling speakers in the kitchen primarily for stereo sound and to avoid the power cable from the Play 5 to the socket. I have attached two images showing the ground and first...

Tony, great. Already decided from an aesthetic point to have him stop but the "technical" reasons make sense. Thanks a lot.

Repointing garden wall - bit of a mess

Hi Tony, thanks for your honesty. Its good to know that its beyond repair but for the moment i think ill ask him to leave the wall. Its a big job and one i dont have the stomach to entertain yet. If the wall degrades further then ill deal with it but its been standing for over 100 years.....

Repointing garden wall - bit of a mess

Hi all, My father in law has tried to be helpful and repoint the garden wall. Its a victorian house and i didnt think there was much wrong with the wall, it has character. Hes done a small section which has left the bricks gray. I assume the colour will go after washed but the render off...
