Can anyone tell me which way is round,i would have thought rough side to the front for the adhesive to grab to, but there are conflicting views, some say smooth side,does it depend on manufacturer?

ive recently bought a new shower and the shower hose outlet is concealed in the wall.
However, the thread is only 40mm long, and with 12mm aqua board on and then tile, it only leaves enough room to get the securing nut on, let alone a fitting.

Ive got a question,ive got some soldiers to build over lintols out of blues,but they keep leaning forward the further i get across the opening,any ideas to stop this?
