    Bricking up old fireplace

I've taken out the old gas fire in my lounge and I'm going to brick up the hole. Is it necessary to put in an air vent, and if so, what size? It's in a ground floor room of a 2 storey terraced house.

Replacing 2 zone valves in CH system

I want to replace the 2 zone valves in my CH system. (Preventative maintenance; it's summer-time and they're 17 years old.) The problem is that I've slackened off the compresssion nuts, but there is not enough movement in the pipes to enable me to remove the valves. I've undone all the pipe...

    mdpe pipe & compatible sealant

I'm running a new mdpe water pipe accross the garden (to replace old lead pipe) and I need to duct it under a waste pipe. I believe I should seal the ends of the duct pipe, but with what? Does it matter which sealant I use? Are some sealants incompatible wth mdpe? Thanks

    Ducting the service pipe

I'm laying a new MDPE service pipe to replace the old lead one, and I have no choice but to pass it under a sewer pipe. I see from the regs that it has to be ducted for 1m either side. What form dose the ducting have to take? Can I simply pass the mdpe through a slightly large pipe? Thanks ACDC

    CAR RADIO CODE

Last week, I changed the battery in my S-reg Vectra. I've disconnected the electrics before and had no problem putting the security code into the radio to get it working again. This time however, I must have done something wrong as instead of getting the word 'CODE' on the display, it is stuck...

    Renewing inhibitor

I have a vented gas fired central heating system, the boiler is an Ideal Classic LXFF. It was installed just over 7 years ago and has worked fine ever since. Should the system be periodically drained and refilled with new inhibitor and if so, how often?

    Leaking tap connectors

Installing new 15mm pipe to basin taps, with 3/4" tap connector on end attaching to base of tap. I can't stop the tap connector leaking. I've wrapped much PTFE tape around the joint and threads which helped a little, but it's still weeping. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Pulling the service fuse

I'm making the preparations for installing a new split load cu. Before I do this I am going to install an isolator between the meter & the existing cu. I'm ready to pull the service fuse (existing cu isolator off, gloves and goggles on, alternative source of light on, lead seal cut), but as I...

    Heavy Duty Anchors

I am fixing a heavy wooden sign to outside brickwork and will be using heavy duty anchors. I am familiar with plastic wall plugs for fixing screws to walls. Do I simply put the metal anchor into an appropiately sized hole in the wall in the same wall as wall plugs? Thanks.

    Planning new CU

I'm planning to replace my old cu (re-wirable fuses, no rcd) with a new split load one. Obviously I'm going to put the ring and electric shower circuits on the rcd side, but what about the immersion, cooker and central heating? I've looked at other split load cu's and some have these 3...
