Can I boost the shine of painted wood?

Hi, I have painted some wooden panels with gloss. There were some fine brush marks, so I rubbed over the whole thing with a super-fine sandpaper. This has 'flattened' the brush marks, but I was wondering if there is a way to revive the full lustre of the gloss. I know there are liquids that can...

    Fitting a radiator corner valve

Thanks, but the question isn't about what side of the radiator they go on, it's about which part of the valve connects to the water pipe and which connects to the radiator. Both parts of the valve look the same from the outside, but when I look inside, they look different. See the image below...

    Fitting a radiator corner valve

Thanks for the replies. Both ends of the valve look exactly the same except, when I look deep into it, one a small circular hole, the other end has a large semicircular hole - as shown in the previous pics. I'm not a plumber (so I don't know a union from a compression) but you can see exactly...

    Fitting a radiator corner valve

Hi, I have bought corner valves to use on a new towel radiator. As you can see on the attached pics, one end of the valve has a small circular hole, the other end has a large semicircular hole. Which end should I connect to the pipe and which end should I connect to the radiator? Many thanks for...

    Mould in extractor fan ducting

Thank you very much, JohnD. I wish the guy who originally fitted my shower and extractor fan had had the knowledge and professionalism that you have! Who would you recommend I ask to replace the fan and ducting - an electrician or a plumber?

    Mould in extractor fan ducting

Okay... Here are three images: shower, loft, and outside. The pic from the loft is poor, but you can see the ridged ducting looping out under the roof. It's normally buried under loft insulation. Many thanks.

    Mould in extractor fan ducting

Yes, the ducting in ridged like you describe. I think that could be the problem. As for pics, there isn't really much to see - just an extractor fan in the shower ceiling. Many thanks!

    Mould in extractor fan ducting

Mmmm, interesting. Thanks for the replies. It does go into the loft then out just beneath roof. But there is no condensation trap - so that may be the problem. Thanks again!

    Mould in extractor fan ducting

Hi, There's a mouldy smell in my shower room, and I think it may be coming from the extractor fan. I removed the cover and cleaned around the motor and blades, which were pretty black, but I couldn't reach into the ducting. First, I'd like to know if mould in extractor fan ducting is a thing...

    Painting interior uPVC

Yep...Following the advice I've received, I've decided to abandon the uPVC idea and go for wood cladding instead. Does anyone know if it's possible to get the kind of tongue & groove timber cladding they sell at B&Q and Wickes that is 95mm wide, but in wider 'planks' of 150mm-ish? Thank you

    Painting interior uPVC

Why do you say that, JohnD? Is uPVC more flammable that wood cladding?

    Painting interior uPVC

Hi, I want to clad a scruffy bedroom ceiling using "uPVC hollow board for soffit and interior cladding". I'm using this because it's lightweight and cheaper than wood paneling. It's the usual white colour, but I want to paint it (probably a cream colour), so it looks more like wood cladding...

    Fix wood to UPVC?

Hi, I have a dormer window extension covered in white UPVC - similar to the one shown in the first image. I want to clad this exterior with wood - similar to that shown in the second image. My question is: How should I fix the wood into place? For example, can I simply screw the wood to the...

How open up tap to change valve?

Done it! Thanks. I just wanted to check that there wasn't a different method in case I messed up the indices, but they came off fine. Thanks again.

How open up tap to change valve?

Hello, I've bought some second hand 'vintage' taps for a small hand basin. I've cleaned them up, and now I want to renew the valves before fitting them to the basin. I know the first step is to remove the cap at the top so that I can unscrew the handle. However, the caps don't have any grip...

    Self-levelling screed on ceramic tiles??

Hi, I want to lay vinyl flooring in my downstairs toilet, which currently has large, solidly fixed ceramic floor tiles. The floor space is only 85cm x 170cm. Removing the tiles is not an option, so I thought I would use Nemesis Self-Levelling Compound (from Screwfix) over the ceramic tiles to...
