    boiler sizing

I'm having to have an unvented cylinder made specifically to fit in my loft, it will be a 350litre twin coil. I asked them to tell me how much heat would be required for the coil (from the boiler) so I could add it into the boiler calc for sizing the boiler. They came back with its 17kw rated...

    solar tubes

Hi has anyone used solar tubes - the natural daylight tubes that come from a dome on the roof to lighten up dark rooms? If so which one do you recommend - are there any makes that you would avoid? It only has to come down less than a metre. I want to know if you've had trouble with them, what...

    sand blasting oak dresser?

Hi, can anyone help? I have an old oak dresser in very dark varnish which I want to clean up and wax in a more natural finish. What would you do? I want to get it sandblasted because there are so many nooks and crannies on it that I think it will be the only way to clean it up completely. Do you...

    building a cold room/ larder

Wow, that's great what you've done there! What a lovely project that must have been! Have you completed the whole building work now? So back to the cold room, if I put trickle vents in do I put 1 high and 1 low on the wall?

    building a cold room/ larder

Fantastic, thank you! This is all helpful. How do you keep it cooler than the kitchen? What materials did you use in the wall between it and the kitchen? And is it on the North facing wall? Mine will be SE facing sandwiched between the utility and cloakroom

    building a cold room/ larder

A room that acts as an old larder used to, cool all year, however I guess not as cool in the summer, just for the fact it would be blimmin' freezing in the winter! The main thing is not to be wasting money heating it and then cooling it again which seems like such a waste of energy and money! I...

    building a cold room/ larder

Thank you, but as far as I can tell the Ozcool is a refridgerated unit which costs to run to cool the space, so you are building an insulated house to protect you from the cold outside and then paying to keep it cool, defeating the object of creating a space that is naturally cool and isn't...

    building a cold room/ larder

Hi, does anyone know how to create a natural cold room? i'm building an extension and I want to have a walk in larder / cold room off the utility room. How would you do it, making sure the rest of the house is not affected and the room remains cold all year round? It's on the SE side of the...

Trying to buy small taps for toilet basin

A pair of cheap basin taps could cost you as little as £15 new. Go to any plumbing merchant and ask for their help in choosing a pair. They'll be better quality and better value than B&Q.

Leaking elbow connection on hot water cylinder

You really need boss white and hemp on cylinder joints, PTFE is too lightweight! You need to re-do the pipework so it sits comfortably. Its no good forcing the pipes, as matey said, you're asking for trouble. Sometimes the only way through it is through it! Sorry!! Beware not to crack the weld...

    Adding limescale reducer/filter to boiler

Check out a company called Ecoflow plc - they do very powerful permanent magnets designed to strap onto the cold inlet pipe just below the boiler with no cutting into the pipes, they take 2 mins to fit and work very effectively plus they are guaranteed for life. I've seen loads of good results...

Cost of replacing WC ball valve.

Sometimes you just can't get an isolating valve on there, and yes its water regs to fit them on new installations, and its 'nice' to fit them if you can, but its not always possible. Quite often the valve in the airing cupboard is seized to turn off the cold supply, and the tank connectors have...

cracked coil in hot water cyl?

I have had exactly this! It sounds exactly like the coil has split. The excessive heat from the Aga created terrible limescale over time (heating hard water above 60 degs causes more limescale - the Aga heated it well in excess of that), which corroded the coil and resulted in the bv in the CWS...

    pilings

Hi, I'm having pilings put in for a house build by a company called Central Piling. They want 80% deposit. Is this ok? When I questioned him he said they'd been stung a few times recently by private customers so wanted security. Thing is, what security do I have that they will turn up and do a...
