    Lime Putty on Smooth Stone?

If it is already pre mixed in a bag, then just mix up a small bit until its a bit runny and flick it on to the brushed and dampened[not wet]surface.I use a small coal shovel for this using a FAST backhand flicking motion. You dont need a thick layer-just a splattering, that when dry provides a...

    oak barge boards.

Nice house, shame about the colour.Your barge boards look about 15 or 16 foot long -whats wrong with them? Not sure about U.k prices -here I would pay about 25 euro/cubic foot [half dry] from country sawmill so Im guessing it might cost you £50 or £60 /cu.foot.As an alternative to replacing...

Found mould on new skirting - is this serious ?

Did you have the windows open or a de-humiderfier running when the heating was turned on?-if not that would explain the mould.Wipe off the fungus ,crank up the heating, open the widows and I say it wont return

    damp around fireplace

NigeFs advice sounds good -enjoy the demolition. The revealed opening will allow air to flow up taking the moisture with it and also enable you to observe any water[if any] that is coming down the chimney on rainy days and determine whether it needs a sweep [lots of soot holds in moisture and...

    damp around fireplace

Yes-a boarded up fireplace should should be fitted with a vent.It allows an air flow within the chimney [and also provides ventilation for the room that the fireplace is in.Is the problem worse after a bit of rain?Is it an open chimney pot?.Is it capped off? Does it have some sort of cowl?.

Lime mortar for pointing & rendering a rubble stone wall

Hi Sullydude-I presumed that you were intending to use natural lime [non-hydraulic or hydraulic] to repair your walls?I dont think just adding a bit of hydrated[powdered] lime to a cement and p.v.a mix is quite what you meant. If Im wrong then you shouldent have any worries about sourcing a few...

Lime mortar for pointing & rendering a rubble stone wall

What is the pointing + render in photo made of ? .What type of finish is on the other to walls ? . How exposed to weather are the walls ? . More pics ?. Working with traditional lime rather than a cement based mortar requires more time and attention to detail due to the fact that it cures using...

    skimming over rusty screws

Good point Steve-apart from the fact that there is also a rust stain on the p/b[in the countersink]and I was hoping to seal that at the same time.....Would a smear of gripfill do the job?or should I replace screws with new ones, forget about stain on p/b and get on with p.v.a +skim.

    skimming over rusty screws

The p/b itself was only exposed to damp not water -they seem pretty sound-just a bit dirty and I was hoping that a coat of p.v.a at time of skimming would deal with that ?

    skimming over rusty screws

Im about to skim a plasterboarded ceiling that had been put up some time ago and exposed to a lot of dampness.Although the building is now dry and the boards seem o.k[a bit dirty though],the p/b screw heads are rusty. Is there something I should treat these with and if so ,what drying/setting...

    Wooden 'step' into conservatory

I wouldent be putting down ply as the edges are prone to wear/absorbing moisture, although if you want a cheap n cheerfull job and you coat it with enough stuff Im sure it will be o.k.I would be looking for a nice bit of hardwood to glue down there-adapt a 2cm off the shelf door threshhold or if...

    Newel post renewal

Foxhole is right-you should be able to get a new one off the shelf and cut shoulder on stump to match.Although this shoulder feature will hide a ny slight difference in thickness, remember that the handrail/newel join will need packing if replacement newel is smaller.

Can an angle grinder be used to cut block paving?

Thermo is right-9" grinder is the one .Word of warning-I bought cheapish one from Argos last year which included a free stone cutting disk. When using for the first time the disk promptly disintegrated sending molten fragments everywhere-thank god I was wearing eye protection.Bought a real disk...
