    Black plastic

We back up to a paddock. The owner had a local farmer in to cut the grass late last year but didn't rake it up. Today he has pegged 1 meter wide black plastic over the paddock in 3 seemingly random strips. Any ideas why? I know, I could just ask him but I rarely see him. Cheers

Hi Ceres, I use a mulching mower. Could this be adding to my moss problem?

    Moss control

Hi All, I fight a continued battle with moss in our lawn. In past years I have applied Evergreen 4 in 1 weed and feed. The downside is that no matter how much a plan to apply when rain is expected or how much I water in, I always end up burning the grass. So, this year I was thinking of...

    Where do gutters run

Thank you for the reply John. If you read my original post you will see that I am aware of soak aways and how to remedy the drainage. I am asking what the long term effects are likely to be considering I am getting cracks (hairline) in the house. Is the movement likely to stop (as perhaps in...

    Where do gutters run

Hi All, We moved into our house 5 years ago. We had a single garage demolished at the side of the house. Whilst it was being demolished we discovered that the rain gutter downpipe didn't run into a drain, it just went about 2inch into the ground and that was it. At the same time of the...

    Insulation Board R value

Hi All, I'm about to start my next project which is insulating our dorma walls. They are about 2mtrs high before the roof line slopes them off. I have already stuffed friction fit insulation I bought from Wicks in between the upright batons. My next plan is to cover over the insulation...

    Radiator insert size

Hi Armo, Thank you for the reply. If not, can I purchase a new tail with a 3/4" union nut?

    Radiator insert size

Hi All, I am wanting to replace some old radiators that are the same size. I have noticed that the insert in the radiator has a larger connector than the new one. So to replace the radiator I would have to drain the system (or bung or freeze the pipe) and replace the valve. Is it...

    MK style junction box

Hi Simon, Thank you for the very good explanation. You have put my mind at rest. One thing though, the electrician did change the circuit from a ring circuit to a radial circuit. I asked him why and he replied that the circuit had been extended and was better suited to a radial circuit...

    MK style junction box

Hi Guys, Thank you for the quick reply's. The only other comment was that the utility light (used to be an outdoor porch that we had converted) is not earthed. So we can only have plastic fittings. The rest of the wiring past all other tests according to his report and personal comments...

    MK style junction box

Hi All, We recently had some home improvements which involved some electrical work. The electrician discovered about 8 brown MK style junction box's under our bedroom floor. He checked them all over and our house has all the relevant safety certificates. Tagged on to his work though is a...

    Bath Level

Hi All, Just putting in a new bath that will have a shower over at the tap end. I have been advised to have the top level of the bath with a 1cm drop to the opposite end of the shower so the water will not collect at the back of the taps. Is this correct? I've fitted it in but not tiled...

    Water under floorboards

Hi Christein, It cost me £500 about 6 years ago. I guess it all depends on where your drain runs as to whether you will need to dig up your drive.

    Tarmac repair

Hi Foxhole, Thank you for your reply. My problem isn't with a small damage area it's more a cosmetic issue with whole area. The top surface is rough and is shedding bits of grit. I want to restore or create a smoother sealed surface. Cheers

    Tarmac repair

Hi All, I have a large tarmac area in front of our house which I cannot afford to replace. I want to freshen it up though. So my question is, any suggestions? I have thought of jet washing it, would this damage it further? I have seen various tarmac paints but I'm a bit...

    Pump Problem

Thank you for the advice 4xpaws. The pipe from the cylinder is a 15mm pipe. So I guess that doesn't help. As an experiment I will try removing the basin pump. It's quite easy to adjust the pipe work to bypass it. If that doesn't work I think your last idea is the best and give them both...
