    Painting old aluminium window frames

Thanks. Bit confused about using silicone/wax on the frames? Won't that interfere with paint adhesion? I intend to paint them white as I think metal framed windows are so ugly (not into 'trendy' colours.) Many thanks for the link.

    Painting old aluminium window frames

Ok thanks. (So this 'lubricant' mentioned on internet re cleaning aluminium isn't necessary?)

    Painting old aluminium window frames

I have a brick built shed at the back of my house and the previous owners installed the aluminium windows from the house when the new double glazing was fitted. The garden has had a makeover (bought the house in April 15) but the shed lets it down as it looks very ugly with brown painted...

    Finlock Gutters reline or remove?

I moved to Poole (south coast) in April and have gradually redecorated the house (ex LA semi) I noticed the inside wall above the front bedroom window felt clammy - the paper came off too easily in huge sections and the metal edging strip was rusty. I had never seen concrete gutters before (I...

    Stairs

I moved into a modern terraced house last August and have spent every waking minute (apart from my job as a dental nurse) doing DIY. If anyone is interested, I changed my stairs from boring orangey stained wood to wrought iron and sanded/stripped the treads. I found a company on the internet...

    Garden makeover

Sorry if the description of my 'challenge' wasn't very clear. My previous property had a balcony outside the French Windows so the balcony to the upstairs flat provided shelter from rain just outside the door. The new house just has a paved area and I would like to have some sort of cover - to...

    Garden makeover

I am quite new to the site so apologies if the question is not appropriate. Having trawled through various questions before, I thought I'd seen similar topics. If the Admin folk on this site consider it unsuitable I'll willingly withdraw. Presumably the advice about attaching an awning or...

How to kill a laurel tree?

My brother successfully killed a tree outside his house in the pavement (roots were growing under his property) by putting a pipe into the ground above the root area and pouring battery acid down it. It took a few months and about a gallon of b.acid - the Council then cut the tree down!

    Garden makeover

Further to my previous request for ideas for my small back garden (photo in My Album) - I would like advice re adding an awning or some sort of cover just outside the french windows. At my previous place there was a balcony on the upstairs flat which provided cover outside my door onto the...

    New garden

Photo taken before I moved in so the pots/table/washing line etc belong to previous owner. Shed has now gone! The 3 rows of paving slabs will go. Small slabs on left of grass are now set into the gravel in front garden. Next on list for makeover!

    Porch makeover

Sadly, I missed out on the house at the last minute! When I eventually sold my flat, someone had pipped me at the post. However, all is not lost and I have found another (totally different!) which will need a bit of titivating inside and out - I WILL BE BACK as they say - to ask for help and...

    Porch makeover

Hi Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. It's good to see some people still have a sense of humour! However, I would still welcome suggestions for the porch (in keeping with the type of house) from anyone with any constructive ideas.

    Tiling over tiles

Thanks for your replies guys. I don't know what's under the tiles - I will try to find out diplomatically - rather than say I hate the floor you put down and want to rip it up!!

    Porch makeover

I am hoping to buy an ex local authority house in good nick but with a very plain featureless porch. Any ideas re designs on how to make it look a bit more attractive? No major building work - maybe sturdy trellis for climbers at the sides? Any suggestions gratefully received! I am attaching...

    Tiling over tiles

Thanks for your advice everyone. I note what you say about tiling over tiles and the weight. In the kitchen of the flat I am selling the tiler did tile over tiles but checked they were sound (he was sceptical) but in the end it worked fine and they look great. Does the same go for floor...
