    Boiler thermostat Vaillant-Salus Plug-In

Hello all, I currently have a Valiant Ecotec Plus boiler with a plug-in wireless Salus ST620VBC Wireless Programmable Thermostat. The Thermostat is really crap and glitching despite numerous resets. Gonna cause havoc in winter with the little ones. So I am looking to replace it. As it is a...

Sink drains slow until plunged, then slow again! And a smell...

Oh no! Its going to be a pain getting things up to clean properly. But why would there be a smell? I was thinking it must be a separate problem like cracked pipe as the smell is coming from under floor not the kitchen plughole.

Sink drains slow until plunged, then slow again! And a smell...

Hi Guys, hope you can give me some ideas. My kitchen sink is not draining well, it is very very slow (last three months). If i plunge, it lets out loads of air, gurgles and drains very fast. After which i run the water to wash my hands and it is already backing up again! I can plunger it again...

Ease of converting standard downlights (GU10) to fire-rated

Hi, above half of the living room is a flat roof and above the other half is the living room of another flat (though the lights are in an additional suspended ceiling). There are only 2 floors and I am in the ground floor flat. I did not ask any more about it as i only saw it on the...

Ease of converting standard downlights (GU10) to fire-rated

Hi, I recently had a minor electrical installation and they wrote on the certificate that the downlights in the living room were not fire rated and should be changed (i only saw this when the NECIEC certificate arrived). So, i figure I should get this done but wanted to know how easy the...

    Swinging loft hatch safety dampener?

Hi, I have just put in a new loft hatch, on hinges with a closer. My issue is that when the hatch opens it swings down quite low and hard (i am quite tall). Does anyone know if you can get brackets or springs or dampeners that can have the hatch open slower and gentler? Cheers, J

Feeling carpet gripper spikes though carpet on stairs

No offence taken! It's a felt back mid range carpet - should i have gone action bac/hessien? I was advised it was compatible with underlay though underlay was not necessary. I guess that meant using grippers rather that sticking it down...i think i am working it out myself and it is not a...

Feeling carpet gripper spikes though carpet on stairs

Hey all, I just had some carpet put in and weirdly, i can feel the spikes of the grippers when i stand at the edge of a room. I could live with that, but I can also feel the spikes when walking up the stairs (without shoes) and that is really annoying and uncomfortable! Anyone know if this...

Electrician put extractor fan venting into loftspace

Cheers guys, I'd do it myself if it were not for the regs. Although that said - can I do it myself? The fan will be outside of zones (about 2 meters from the bathtub/shower)?

Electrician put extractor fan venting into loftspace

Just spoke to him - apparently this is how he has been taught to do extractors and he claims it is fine. He says he is a competent person with NICEIC and as such in his expert opinion it is fine. He didn't check the extractor fan box or instructions supplied because I bought the fan. It...

Electrician put extractor fan venting into loftspace

I had some bathroom fitters in who subcontracted the work. I left it to them, and they left it to the electrician to decide. He told my fitters that my fan - the Envirovent "Filterless" Extractor fan has a "steam filter" that will prevent any future problems. He already got paid. He is not...

Electrician put extractor fan venting into loftspace

Hi, I am concerned about the extractor fan installation an electrician just put into my house. I was out when he put it in and he has placed it above a radiator in the bathroom ceiling ducting straight into the empty loft space. This doesn't seem right. Also, the ducting he had was...

Benefits of oversizing your radiators - is it recommended?

Hi, I am putting in new heating and am tempted to oversize my radiators on the assumption that it will heat the house quicker... Apart from cost of radiators, can anyone see any downsides? Is it recommended or problematic in any way? Cheers, J

Filling a bath with combi and mains cold using 15mm pipes

Hey guys, Would running 15mm pipes carrying combi hot (valiant ecotec plus 31) and mains cold into an off the wall bath tap (thermostatic bath mixer - mono bloc?) result in a big loss of water volume for filling a bath? The pipe run from boiler to bath is about 8 metres. I think the...

Worth converting 2 radial circuits to ring?

I'd be one of those that thinks their house burning down is a bad thing.. The question now is - do i need to be concerned those sockets burned out? Will the new RCD CU prevent that happening? Am I better off converting to radials (to turn the whole post a full 180 degrees)

Worth converting 2 radial circuits to ring?

Ok - it seems after much investigation there were not 2 radials but 1 ring. A combination of the electricians low battery on his tester and a couple of "burnt" sockets. I don't quite understand. But I am told it is a 2.5mm cable ring circuit - now on a new consumer unit!
