    RCD disconnection time?

Had a PIR done yesterday on an installation that it fed from a 7.5KVa generator. This feeds a CU through about 15 mtr of SWA. All the "dead" tests on the circuits after the CU were ok. But when the Hager 100A/30mA RCD was tested, it took 60msec at 30mA to disconnect. The question is this. Is...

    Small tiles, uneven wall?

Have some 40mm sq. tiles (on backing sheet 250mm sq.) to put on kitchen wall that undulates. Have got it as flat as poss, but was hoping to vary the adhesive thickness to improve finished flatness. Was thinking of using a slow setting adhesive so that I could fix perhaps 10 to 15 sheets of...

    Locating mains incomer?

The iron water pipe that serves my house is leaking, caused by a big tree over it (on my property). If I dig a trench round the tree, the Water Co. will supply & connect up a new pipe. The incoming mains cable, and gas pipe, are also under the front lawn somewhere! Routes unknown. Ought I to...

    TT, multiple earthing.

My detached garage is fed with SWA cable via fuse/breaker from directly after the meter. The garage has it's own Cons. unit with RCCD & earth rod. The rods are 30 mtr apart. The house & garage earths are connected together via the SWA, is this correct, or should they be isolated?

    BT lines

I have a friend who runs an Indian takeaway. He has 2 business BT lines, but is also signed up to an Alternative Service Provider, using Carrier Preselection. Since Friday no-one can dial in, both numbers give the message "this number does not accept incoming calls". He can't dial out, even...

    Overload protection

I have a 7.5KVa single phase generator (240V, 32A). Want to protect it from overload, would a 32A MCB or wire fuse be best? It is often run at full rating, with occasional 5A overload. This it can take for short periods (it's a big old beast), but I would like some way of remotley indicating...

    Big c/o switch

I need a big c/o switch, perhaps 50A. Have a site with a 230V 30A single phase generator. They need a second one, perhaps 100A. One OR the other will be used regularily. Think I need a simple "knife" contact c/o sw. Single pole would do, but a 3 pole would be better (could then route the starter...

    Telephone Ringing Problem

I have an intermittent fault. Sometimes an incoming call rings just once, if I hear it & pick up the Rx. the line is there an comms. ok. Other times ringing is normal. Can't find anything wrong with the house wiring, suspect the incoming line is intermittent high resistance (rural situation...

    RCCD "sensitivity"

Does anyone know what appox. current the Trip button on a 30mA RCCD "applies"? Is it,say, around 35 mA, or much larger? I have a 30mA RCCD "downstream" of a 100mA one, and when you press the test button on the 30mA one, both trip out (no appliances connected). Is this right, I would have...
