Water Hammer cured by turning stopcock down..but will it leak?

Hi all I've had frequent random issues with water hammer which appear to have got worse since having a new boiler fitted. I get a 'knocking' noise 1 second after every time I turn the cold (and sometimes) hot water tap off quickly, when the toilet finishes filling up (quieter noise) and the...

Old MK Metal back box too wide to fit 2-Gang DP Switched plug socket

Thanks all...your right I probably have created a bit more work for myself but I had already bought the double socket and was so focused on that old box being the wrong size it didn't dawn on me that I could have used single sockets. Oh well it will keep me busy and occupy my time for a bit...

Old MK Metal back box too wide to fit 2-Gang DP Switched plug socket

Thanks for input guys, I did consider the one-socket option but really could do with two to accommodate the TV and cable box, instead of using double adaptors, extension leads etc... Well I decided to remove the old back box and despite a bit of rubble coming out (mainly from the top right)...

Old MK Metal back box too wide to fit 2-Gang DP Switched plug socket

Thanks for quick reply... If I were to use 2 single sockets would I just wire up the live, neutral & earth wires from each cable separately to each socket? I'm not sure what you mean by what is it supplied from? Is it not just wired up from the consumer unit as per all other switches in the...

Old MK Metal back box too wide to fit 2-Gang DP Switched plug socket

Hi all - just wondering if there is a way round this; I want to try and fit and wire up a 2-Gang MK plug socket to allow me to hook up a wall mounted TV more directly instead of using long extension cable. The previous electric connection was to an old 'Honeywell' heating thermostat that was...

    Installing new light fixture.

Hi EFL thanks for your reply. So the switched live is the only live wire I need to connect to new light fitting. (PS I'm presuming it's switched live because the other two black cables are connected as neutrals in old ceiling rose. There was no red tape wrapped round it.) Do I leave the...

    Installing new light fixture.

Hi all I'm hoping to fit a new 3 light LED fixture to replace the single pendant light in the bedroom. These are the cables/wires coming from the ceiling and the new light fixture I want to replace it with... I've been browsing the web for a few tips/ideas because i'm not an electrician...

Raising toilet height due to new flooring..

Thanks, well I'm quite happy with the shape I managed to cut-out for the Pedestal today with the 5mm hardwood sheet, there's a slight gap but I can cover this will sealant. So hopefully it will be easier when it comes to the Vinyl flooring. Just one other thing, I am about to screw the...

Raising toilet height due to new flooring..

Looks good keith... yes I will probably do it in the same order. The Vinyl is quite flexible, bendy, so hopefully I screw the toilet directly onto the plywood+subfloor and then shape the vinyl around the toilet. The sink however was siliconed onto the pedestal and it's rock solid, so I cut my...

Raising toilet height due to new flooring..

It's old slightly uneven floorboards now... then I'll be putting 5mm plywood on top, then it will probably be something like this... http://www.diy.com/departments/colours-oak-effect-luxury-vinyl-click-flooring-176-m-pack/539739_BQ.prd?icamp=recs&rrec=true I'm not the most natural DIY'er...

Raising toilet height due to new flooring..

Thanks, I guess I should be okay. I know it's better to have the toilet higher than the soil pipe, but I was just wondering with the extra 5mm of plywood, then 4mm of Luxury Vinyl on top of this, would it now be too high possibly? .... but I'll do what you suggest I'm sure there will be...

Thanks, just out of interest what are the strips of blue sticky tape on the wall tiling for? Just curious ;)

Raising toilet height due to new flooring..

Hi all I'm about to lay 5mm hardwood sheets over the floorboards of my bathroom to give it a clean, level surface to then lay luxury Vinyl Click flooring. I've done enough searching online to draw the consensus that it's better to lay the new flooring underneath your toilet/pedestal etc...

Hot water not turning off completely DUPLICATE THREAD 1.

Sorry I didn't mean to post a duplicate thread, I had the spinning icon when submitting the topic and must have thought the original thread had not been created; Thanks for replies, the other thread has been locked so I'll copy to here; I turned the red gate valve as far as it will go to shut...

Hot water not turning off completely DUPLICATE THREAD 1.

Would replacing the gate valve with a lever valve involve cutting through the pipe? I'm trying to avoid doing that. I might give a go at draining the system though. What happens if you have air locks? Does it cause any damage?

Hot water not turning off completely DUPLICATE THREAD 1.

Hi All I have a dripping hot water tap in the kitchen so thought this was as good a time as any to replace both taps. You can get new pair of pillar taps approx £15 at DIY stores. I can stop the cold water from the mains stop cock, but I have a hot water tank upstairs in airing cupboard, and...

    Painting a front door

Hi I managed to put on the undercoat & primer last week, unfortunately now the weather is typically going cold again, with sub zero temps forecast overnight and not much above double digits during the day. What are the drawbacks with leaving the door for any length of time with just the...

    Painting a front door

Hi I'm about to repaint my front door which is almost identical to yours. The only question I have is about sanding. If you sand the door after you put the undercoat on what type of sandpaper do you use, because I don't want to take any of the paint off, or rough it up too much to leave any...
