    Window won't open

Finally opened it. Made a “tool” – a bent flathead 3” nail, then I filed the flat head bit off (probably didn’t need to as I had removed the glass). I bent it in the wrong place so hacksawed the end off. Took the glass out again (need to perfect a method of taking the mitred infill strips...

    Window won't open

I just saw this on another thread where they hit it hard and it unlocked - mine is vertically hinged and it is the bottom mech not moving so I have it tougher I think... "I had a bottom opening window which would not open due to broken opening mechanism one side was free, the other side stuck...

    Window won't open

I have a number of double glazed window that do not open. I have had this before and a builder friend managed to fix it. I am not sure how he did fix it but he basically took the glass out and somehow got to the mechanism. Sadly I didn’t watch the rest. A metal part had snapped so it was only...

Sticky Oily Goo Leaking From Windows

All my double glazed windows have an oily slime seeping out at the bottom. I have wondered why since buying the house in 2013. Today I was removing a glazing panel to sort a jammed window (another posting to come!) and think I know the problem. The black glazing tape around the glass appears...

Trevi thermostatic shower valve - no hot water any more

I do think plumbing can be a bit of a dark art going by the zero number of responses/suggestions. As an engineer I can understand that fitting a complete system is technically ideal but fixing something that someone else installed can be problematic. For anyone that follows this thread I bought...

Trevi thermostatic shower valve - no hot water any more

This thermostatic shower valve (Trevi CTV Built-in A3102AA) has gradually got worse since I moved into the house 3 years ago. It used to work most of the time eventually kicking out hot water but gradually got worse. It would probably have been professionally fitted as the rest of the house...

    Sealing Bay Window Surround

I have posted before about my whistling windows and fixed a few through removal and binning the plastic trim, filling, caulking and painting. Looks good and no whistling. Now I have started on the lounge bay window but the gap is rather huge. I have removed a piece of trim from the front...

UPVC window internal gaps – too big for Caulk?

Got a rather large gap around the bedroom window. 10mm wide by 25mm deep. Considered pumping decorators caulk in as it is dead cheap and I have the plastic cover strips (40mm? wide) that go round the window hiding any dodgy sealant. What about stuffing it with paper and then caulking it...
