New parking area - MOT sub base?

Thanks r896neo - it looks like I'm back to MOT type 1 or 2 then, any advice on what depth I should go for on top of what's already there? Just considering that when wackered we will 'lose' some stone in the softer layer underneath.

New parking area - MOT sub base?

Thanks for your replies. If I got 2inch clean would that wacker down at all or would it stay pretty loose everywhere? I ideally want something that can stay there until we put gravel on the top of it, would 2inch clean be fine as a sub base to gravel? Thanks

New parking area - MOT sub base?

Hi We’ve recently dug out a large parking area (18m x 7m). We still have a lot of landscaping to do outside and as such we don’t want to spend money on our finished topping i.e. gravel/tarmac etc until all the work has been done. We need something that is usable (to park and turn vehicles on)...

    Oil Central Heating (or electric?)

Thanks for all the tips - I will definitely take a look at the Hounsfield and Grant boilers. Is there a way to work out what output I would need? Just purely to compare prices. Also we have an immersion heater tank for the hot water in the house. Would it best to keep this and just use the...

    Oil Central Heating (or electric?)

Simond - thanks for the heads up, I will make sure to do this before buying anything but will do as much or as little as we can to keep costs down. Assuming we could install the radiator and internal pipe work or would you, as a technician, need to do that also? Any particular condensing oil...

    Oil Central Heating (or electric?)

Hi all, Looking for a bit of advice. I live in an electric-only cottage in a village with no mains gas, it has been refurbished and insulated etc and now I am the point where I need to decide what heating we have going forward (we have nothing at the moment, just wood burner) I don’t know...

Smoke/heat alarm in kitchen with woodburner

Thanks that's really helpful. I think we will go with a heat detector and carbon monixide alarm in the kitchen and then smoke detector upstairs. Do we have to put smoke alarms in all the bedrooms or will one in the central hallway suffice?

Smoke/heat alarm in kitchen with woodburner

I'm struggling to work out the right alarms to fit in our new extension - we have a large kitchen which has a woodburner fitted, I know we need a carbon monoxide alarm but not sure what to put with it. Our plans say a heat detector but looking online they say not to install in a room where the...

    downlights - insulation

Just spoken to our electrician and he said that he would suggest buying buying fire rated light and leaving a six inch gap in the insulation around each light, so now I am confused. Is this normal practice or it will allow sound to travel through to the upstairs bedrooms?

    first fix - what order?

Thanks - that's useful to know. As you only fit the studs after the floor has gone down, does all the electricty for upstairs sockets run from the ceiling down the walls? We were thinking that the cables (apart from the lights of course) would be run through the floor joists and then come...

    Integrated cooker hood - how?

Thanks - that's really helpful. Our cooker hood says it extracts 460 (m3/h) so I assuming that is enough to clear out the 60m3 in enough time? I've just remembered that we also have external ventilation...

    downlights - insulation

Thanks for the tip, I will look into that! I assume you need to put holes in it or leave a gap at the bottom It'll probably take me ages to make them but would be nice to save a bit of cash!

    Limestone flags - dark staining

Thank you for your advice, I contacted the supplier of the slabs in the end and they are sending me a sample cleaner to try - so will see how I get on!

    Integrated cooker hood - how?

Thanks for all your replies. We are fitting the kitchen ourselves (hubby is a joiner so he has made our kitchen) Just finding this extraction bit a little tricky. The oven we are buying comes with a half price 110cm cooker hood (the chimney type, works out about £140) so im thinking I...

    downlights - insulation

Getting a bit confused regarding downlights and whether they can/can’t be insulated over. We need to install 15 downlights in the ceiling in our new extension (in-between the joists of the ground and first floor) so we also need acoustic wool to fit inside the cavity. Originally I was...

    first fix - what order?

We have recently had a two storey extension built and we are on the first fix stage. Downstairs is one big room, upstairs will be split into two bedrooms, an ensuite and a hallway. The upstairs is partly in the roof with sloped ceilings which will have insulated plasterboard on the rafters...

    Integrated cooker hood - how?

Thanks for the link. Wow! They cost a fortune, had no idea extractors were so expensive - I was expecting to pay £200-300, I may have to rethink!

    Integrated cooker hood - how?

Hi all, New kitchen being done at the moment - we are having a traditional range cooker (induction) 110cms built into an alcove. I have seen lots of traditional kitchens like this but I can understand what extractor I will need for this. I have searched for built in cooker hood and...
