    lintel

Hi, I will be installing a UB for the loft conversion that will be bearing on an internal wall. This wall has a doorway directly below where the UB will be bearing. The door is quite low (1800) so whilst I'm taking a few bricks out for the padstone I may as well take a few more out and raise the...

    spliced rafter

Would the upper purlin with collars above be classed as a structural member, thus have the spliced connection there?

    Tiling over floorboards

Yep, but may be better to use thicker ply depending on joists spacing.

    Tiling over floorboards

Ree I see your in the states, could osb be something different over there? The original question referred specifically to a type of osb sold at b&q. Do you know this product? Have you ever tiled onto it, or osb? What would you advise? osb or ply (regardless of cost)

    Tiling over floorboards

Not suitable, use wbp or marine ply 12mm minimum, screwed at 200mm centres. Personally I would also ditra mat over as well, I've seen/replaced floors tiled directly onto ply that have cracked at the board joints (could actually measure 1200&2400 between cracks.) And yes, these were adequate...

Porcelain tiles chipping - so frustrated!

Hate to say it, but it's a cheap tool. Just not up to the job, the blade wobble could be causing it. Try a different blade specific for porcelain and expect to spend £30+ for a decent one

    Please help with tiling prep

If the gaps are small enough, then just use the tape supplied with wp1. It will be dry enough to tile the next day. If you have large gaps then, yes, you can fill with your adhesive. BAL rapid set is dry enough for grouting after 3 hours, not sure about tanking. Will certainly be dry enough...

    Doubling rafters for new velux

Thanks John, How do I find the weight of tiles and close board? And where can I find the load rating table? I've only seen span tables before, no mention of the actual weight that they can carry.

    spliced rafter

Hi, I need to double.up rafters around velux Windows. Is it possible to splice the new rafters so as to avoid removing the roof covering to fit them behind the purlins. The splice would have to be mid span, not at a structural member. Thanks in advance

    Doubling rafters for new velux

Between lower and upper purlin is the longest span, so sliding up from elsewhere isn't possible. It may just work on the diagonal but the rafters are at 330 centres so might not quite be enough! Removing the roof covering is what I'm trying to avoid. Do you know about splicing the rafter?

    Doubling rafters for new velux

Thanks RNreindeer, However the issue is the length not the depth of the rafter. The only option I can see is splicing, but this would have to be mid span, not over a structural member. Do you know if there is an exceptable way to do this?

    loft conversion

Hi Cabbyfan, I will be doing a party wall notice. I was going to stud out in front of the party wall to accommodate insulation, then consult BC as to whether I should use pink or blue p.board. I'm just not sure how to continue this down the stairwell? I need to double the rafters for the...

How did you get the new rafters behind the purlin? Is this possible without removing the roof covering?

    loft conversion

Hi All, Just finalising plans for my loft conversion and have a couple of details to clear up. Firstly, how to insulate the party wall and how to go about continuing this down the new stairs well? And how to double up rafters without removing the roof covering? Is there a way to get new ones...

    building notice or full plans

Thanks cjard, This is the answer/advice I was looking for. So I think then submit as full plans, I thought that full plans would have to show exact detail. If I can write a cover note stating certain things such as all doors to be replaced with fire doors, underside of new staircase to be...
