    earth loop test

I got a new electric cooker (Beko, total power consumption 10kW) from Currys. The Currys installation engineer said there is some problem with the cooker connection point (earth loop test failed with a reading of 160 and the red switch of the cooker is not isolated from extractor hood switch)...

    Felt at roof edge

following a rain I found that some of the felt at the edge of my roof (that is close to the gutter) is quite wet. Does this mean rain somehow gets under a broken tile and goes down on the felt? Some parts of the edge felt that overhangs into the gutter is frayed or missing. Is this normal tear...

    Felt at roof edge

while I was clearing the gutter I found the felt at the edge is worn. At Some place the felt is very brittle and some is torn and dangling in the gutter. Since I have upvc fascia and soffit I suppose this is not a problem? Also if the tiles are good the felt at edge won't cause any problem I hope?

    toilet waste pipe joint

2 years ago there was a small leak at the toilet waste pipe joint so I applied some plumbers mait and it seemed to be working. Now I found occasionally (not sure if it is after flush or not) the joint is a little wet. My question is does plumbers mait become defective over time as it never...

    Tile corner broken off

my house is about 20 years old and has interlocking Roman concrete tiles. I noticed there are a couple of places where the lower right hand corner of the tile is broken off. I noticed a neighbour has the same problem. Does anyone know why always this corner is prone to breakage? Is it common...

thanks for your reply. In that case the cloak has been missing for many years! I mean what is the undercloak for in the first place? I suppose it cannot support the mortar as it is overhang out of the wall for about 5cm?

burning rubber smell from electric oven

A quick update. yesterday I had a repair guy coming around change the selector switch. However, when I used it today, turning to grill and grill was not on; turning to fanned oven, it seems the grill and oven came on together. Also, it seems the switch is not properly aligned with the dial. Any...

    roof verge and undercloak

20 year old house. I noticed that there are 2 vertical thin cracks in the mortar of the roof verge, near the top. Also, at the lowest end of the verge (where the slope finishes and the verge becomes flat) there is no undercloak beneath the mortar. The mortar just sits directly on the soffit...

    Toilet inlet pipe

hi I just noticed there is a "scar" on the inlet pipe of my toilet cistern. I cannot tell if it is just paint missing or some surface metal is worn out. Does anyone know how thick is the metal wall of this kind of pipe and would this defect cause any leaking in future? Thanks.

    Crack on internal wall

Found some thin cracks in a bedroom upstairs. House is 20 years old. Hairline cracks less than 1mm wide. One under window, other at two walls meet and between wall and ceiling. Is this just a cosmetic issue or should I be concerned? How to patch it up? Many thanks.

    crack on internal walls

Hi My house is about 20 years old. In one of the bedrooms on the 1st floor, I found a couple of small hairline cracks (less than 1mm wide): one is below the window sill, and others at 2 walls meet or the wall and ceiling meet. I have two questions: 1 is this merely a cosmetic issue rather than...

burning rubber smell from electric oven

Thanks for your reply. I have not cleaned the oven for quite some time. And have never taken the back panel out. So you reckon it could be due to fat and grease? how can I make sure it is not electric wire burning?

burning rubber smell from electric oven

Hi I got a Zanussi dual fuel cooker. Sometimes when the electric oven was turned on, there was a quite strong burning rubber smell. I couldn't see any plastic or rubber material inside the oven. Some posts on the Internet suggest it could be due to electric fault - short circuit and wire...

    house foundation

Hi My house is a detached built around 1993. I just found on one side of the house, the earth ground level seems to be quite low (the street is on a small slope and this side is at the lower level). As a result a small part of the foundation is exposed above the ground. Not 100% sure, but I mean...
