    Copper pipe finishing.

The Zinsser clear primer is an interesting option - I have used their products to paint UPVC windows with great results - so thanks for the heads up. Their tech spec does not mention if it is suitable on continuously 'hot' surfaces - such as heating pipes - so I will need to check with them.

    Copper pipe finishing.

I thank you for the suggestion - painting them is such a faff, and it seems that the previous occupants experienced the continual discolouration and just regularly overcoated (not very well) to overcome it. I figure if I could stop the oxidisation they would look better - now that I've stripped...

    Copper pipe finishing.

Zinsser Primer is white - my question was about sealing the bare copper to stop oxidisation and discolouration and retaining its brightness - such as, for example, seen on the equipment on ships. .

    Copper pipe finishing.

I have just finished cleaning all the ridiculously thick coats of paint with runs every couple of inches off of our exposed copper heating pipes. (Next job is to do the same with the skiting boards and architraves). If possible we would like to leave the pipes unpainted. As bare copper tends to...

    New surface for driveway.

We have a section of drive laid with pavers that butt up against a further parking area laid with tarmac (about 40 sq m). The tarmac, however, seems to consist of a base coat where the top coat has come away (there are patches of about 100mm in diameter where the top coat still appears in...

Difference in heat loss by U value

Current new build regs require a wall u value of 0.2w/m2k. With our wall construction, achieving this requires a PIR board thickness of 120mm, or 100mm if battens are used creating an air gap between the plasterboard and PIR. Ideally, it would be more practical to use 60mm PIR, but this would...

Question re gas boiler service and 'Safety Record.

You are right - there was no chain. Yes, my guy serviced the boiler, replacing the ignition electrodes etc while he was at it, and also refitted the cooker including a chain - and didn't charge the earth either.

Question re gas boiler service and 'Safety Record.

The issues the solicitor is dealing with are not related to the gas - and are more serious than just a lack of boiler service and a badly sealed flue.

Question re gas boiler service and 'Safety Record.

I take your point about the service, but when we were given a copy of the certificate we were told that a FULL service had been carried out at the time of its issue. You are right, we were not the owner of the property at the time the certificate was done. It was done by the previous owners 2...

Question re gas boiler service and 'Safety Record.

On the Gas Safety Record there is a section regarding service and testing. I have three questions regarding the Inspection section.: - If the certificate has 'Pass' under the heading 'Flue Visual inspection, but around the flue where it passes through the wall there are clear gaps all the way...

    Exterior painting

I bumped into a fellow dog walker the other day and he happened to have over 20 years of rendering and painting experience. He said that the problem with 'thinned' masonry paint is that it leaves a very thin coating when the water evaporates or is 'sucked' in. He told me to roller it first...

    Exterior painting

Just to close this topic, I have found the answer to my issue and have tried it on one 24 sq metre wall with success - no 'pitting' and all done in just over 2 hours. Thanks to those who contributed.

    Exterior painting

Using Sandtex - but it's Plymouth Grey. It's not the number of coats, its the size and depth of the 'holes' in the render that are so small and deep that the roller can't get paint into them. I have a 3 Stage Fuji HVLP (1600W) - but it doesn't seem to be powerful enough to blow the paint. Not...

    Exterior painting

The previous owner of our house rendered it with an extremely rough finish. He then painted it with a very dark colour, and we are told it looked so patchy when he rollered it that he then spent many days up the scaffold using a brush to 'stipple' the paint to get it to look right. We want to...

    What control panel to buy

We have an alarm system that has various wireless PIR sensors as well as a wireless Siren outside. However the control panel was removed by the previous owner - he said because it developed faults and would go off all the time, I think it was a Texecom one. Before I get quotes for a new...

    Painting a satellite dish.

This topic is widely covered online, but the recommendations are usually to use matt paint, and car paint aerosols are frequently mentioned. Has anyone any experience of painting a dish with masonry paint - this is matt, developed for outside use, and using the same colour as used on a rendered...

    Problem with Range Cooker

Thanks, so it sounds like my problem is the switch because the oven temp light goes off at the set temperature, but the oven continues heating up. Are the control switches a common part for all range cookers, or do they vary according to the oven manufacturer? I ask because the supplier has...

    Problem with Range Cooker

It is a result of a discussion with the supplier that I would like to get an understanding of how the oven temperature light and element are controlled - so once again I ask if anyone can explain this for me.

    Problem with Range Cooker

We have a relatively new (6 months) Range cooker which has 3 ovens, one of which has a problem. No matter what temperature is set on the dial the oven heats up to maximum and does not switch off - although the heating indicator light switches off at the temperature set on the dial. I have no...
