Try the Multi Purpose cleaner they sell in the supermarkets (yellow stuff), it seems to clean and get rid of pests much better then bleach also put a cap full in the cistern so there is always some in the water when you flush Use plenty, it smells a lot better than bleach!

the tap doesn't have a check valve, all the tap has is a isolating valve Should I fit a tap with one? was it common or ok for them to be fitted without a check valve?

I think the neighbour has weighed it in, it was on one or two of the 15mm compression fittings

It was done before I purchased the house, so it was quite a few years ago. It was more of a 'what if' question, as I seem to have some anxiety about my drinking water!

I only ask as the neighbour has just had his kitchen refitted and there seems to be some on his cold water compression fittings. and my kitchen was fitted around the same time
