Heavy sliding patio doors over cavity wall opening

It's more about the load, half of the frame potentially dangling over the cavity, rather than insulation issues. But yes I will stick some celotex in that (very deep) gap first.

Heavy sliding patio doors over cavity wall opening

Hello everyone, I read on the sliding patio doors brochure that they are very heavy and require a solid base. Their base frame will sit over a cavity void. I am thinking to close the cavity with a steel plate, they are "standard" 8mm thick, runs all the length along the bottom of the door. Is...

    Creating habitable space in loft

There are no such restrictions. One more question, the currently applied for plans show a normal pitched roof. What if I introduce a break in the slope, a gentle slope to start with, and somewhere down the line a faster incline to arrive at the exact same eaves height as before? This will give...

OK great, full planning application it is then. I wonder if they reject it and what excuse they will dream up now.

    Creating habitable space in loft

Can anyone please tell me if I need to apply for planning permission to convert loft space to habitable space with the addition of a few roof windows and a staircase? I would have thought that since there is no visible roof changes I would not be needing a full planning application, but you...

    Window cill

Yes I agree the vertical lines appear way too perfect and the bricks cut at weird sizes, but why a large company like Everest would ever need to resort to photoshop? They declare £110 ml revenue each year! They surely can afford a proper front door and two windows real photo?

    Creating habitable space in loft

Hi, I already have approvals for the higher ridge and the house enlargement in general. And I have started the construction works already.

    Creating habitable space in loft

Hello everyone, Quick summary : I am in the process of building a front and side extension to my bungalow and creating a brand new roof to cover the whole structure. The new roof has a higher ridge than the previous roof. In the past many years the council has refused a straight forward second...

    Window cill

Don't think it is photoshopped, it appears prominently on Everest's main page along with a front door and everything. https://www.everest.co.uk/double-glazing-windows/sliding-sash/

    Window cill

OK, look how terrible this is, and it's coming straight out of Everest's brochure! You'd think they would know better. That is why I am trying to prevent this from happening as much as possible.

    Window cill

Sorry my previous was referring to window width openings. The window frame spans from brick left to brick right without mortar ( the frame attaches straight on the bricks ) and I have counted four whole bricks, one brick turned on its side, and six joints , and it is 4 x 215 + 102.5 + 6 x 10 =...

    Window cill

OK, for window openings I have it as 1022.50 composed of 4.5 bricks - is that a correct dimension?

    Window cill

For windows and doors heights, is it correct to use the DPC as reference or should I be using the finished floor level internally ? I ask because the DPC is already present (or in some areas will be present shortly) whereas the finished floor (for example screed over block and beam) will come later.

    Window cill

I have measured from the top of the DPC line to the top of the window cill, so for example we have 11 courses of bricks and 10 mortar joints - 11 x 65 + 10 x 10 = 815 mm Am I doing it wrong? Is this the right way to tell the builders how to build it?

    Electrical wiring layout

I will have to either trust the IKEA designer which I have done already and have a good (but not perfect) idea of where to put things, or get a kitchen designer in from some company that he will also have ideas. I will start looking now then...

    Electrical wiring layout

Unfortunately, myself for the time being. I wanted to employ the structural engineer in a supervising capacity, but he has been very busy and hard to reach lately. Yes, I get that, and I have a pretty good idea where I want things to go, so I think for practical purposes I will simply indicate...

    Council tax and VAT exemption

Do you remember who/which authority you applied to? I called the Building Control in the council and they said the VAT is a national requirement and has nothing to do with them and they would not be able to advise me in any way.

    Electrical wiring layout

OK thanks for the reply. The work is extensive so all old electrics and most plumbing will be stripped out. New rooms and spaces will be created and many old rooms demolished / changed. We do not so far have plans as to where all the electrics/plumbing will go. Having read your other thread...

    Builders agreements

I understand that there may be outlays right at the start, eg equipment, materials etc and the builder may want to be paid in advance ? As long as you pay for each step 15-30 days in advance and not 6 months it should be OK? Now that I think of it more, I suppose there also needs to be a...
