    What's supporting this arch?

Brunel not withstanding, it's very shallow for a self-supporting arch. Additionally the mortar joins seem to vertical, not radial around the arch.

    What's supporting this arch?

Late 1970s house. Previous occupant told us there used to be an arch that they had "bricked up". We know from neighbours that the openings are original "as built" features. Investigation has revealed the metal angle bead around the opening, complete with woodchip paper, LOL. The image shows the...

Definitely not listed, don't believe it's a CA.

Window bricked up on inner leaf only

Just viewed a house for sale and discovered a window that had been bricked up on the inner leaf only, i.e., the frame and glass were still in place in the outer leaf. Surely this cannot, in any way, be building regs compliant? Has anyone come across this before? We will be having a full survey!!!

Cheers for the positive replies. I just needed a bit of encouragement :)

Raising roof of flat roof extension

I omitted to say it's a bungalow. Marrying a pitched roof to the existing roof is a whole new level of pain. Similarly, demolishing and rebuilding is a lot more work. I am happy with the expense for what I am trying to achieve. The inconvenience is current (low ceiling height) and will be...

Raising roof of flat roof extension

I have a 70s flat roof extension with brick inner and Bradstone outer skin. It has very low ceiling height which I want to improve by adding say a 2-3 brick courses or one course of conrete blocks. Atop this will be a new warm roof. The new masonry will be hidden by a deeper fascia. Location and...

Window too narrow to drill for fixings

I thought this would be a friendly forum. I really don't understand your attitude. Obviously not.

Window too narrow to drill for fixings

It's fixed but the glass is not fitted. I don't see your point. The width between the sides is not enoght to get in with drill and bit. Anyway I took out the much larger window in the same room (~1800x1200) and that was held in by...foam! LOL Just two brackets on one side. Replacement is in and...

Window too narrow to drill for fixings

uPVC window too narrow to get drill and bit in to drill for side fixings. What the jury's verdict on just sticking it in with expanding foam (specifically Screwfix exapnding sticky foam)? I may be able to put a frame fixer through the cill. The head is also difficult as I don't really want to...

How to drain down when pipework is higher than radiators?

I see now I wasn't clear, yes I want to drain the pipework, as I am replacing a couple of rads but also need to rejig some of the pipework. Two small rooms have been knocked into one but they left both (1970s) rads and ugly pipework. I am replacing with a single modern rad.

How to drain down when pipework is higher than radiators?

I do have drain off lockshields, but I still need to open the system higher up to let air in so the water will drain out. Anyway, I think I now know the answer. There are a number of airvents in the loft at the highest points of the pipework. If I open those the air can get in and allow the...

How to drain down when pipework is higher than radiators?

In a two storey house I just opened the highest bleed valve in the system and let the water drain out. Now I live in a bungalow where all of the pipework drops down from the loft so all the bleed valves are below the water level. Boiler is also in the loft and it's a pressurised system. Any tips?

Mystery Items Found in the Garden

Different parts of the garden. Two different items but it looks like I messed up adding the pictures. The second inline thumbnail should actually be the picture that is attached to the original post.

Mystery Items Found in the Garden

Found in the garden of our new house. First is a crock lid on top of a pipe that goes straight down for 3 - 4 ft. THe lid may not be original. Found under a concrete path that has been there anything up to 60yrs (when the house was built). Second is metal with ribs extending out an inch or...
