Are my window straps ok like this?

I've just replaced an old window with a new upvc window. The profile of the window doesn't allow the straps to be fully rotated to 90 degrees as the profile channel it narrower than the strap fingers that stick out. Is this ok to leave it like this, or do I need to find some other straps that...

Supporting a wall spanning over a kitchen worktop

I had wondered about doing it this way. What is the reason for doubling up the strongboys, is it due to the weight of the 2 skins being too much for 1 strongboy or some other reason?

Supporting a wall spanning over a kitchen worktop

Ah, I always thought they were metal. Although with the price of timber these days it would probably be cheaper to use metal.

Supporting a wall spanning over a kitchen worktop

I’ve not found a single hire place near me that hires needles. The only thing I’ve found is something called Prop Pals but can only find the 1200mm version not the 1800mm ones that I would need.

Supporting a wall spanning over a kitchen worktop

I need to install an insulated catnic into a cavity wall 100mm blocks each side with a 60mm cavity. The opening will be 1800mm plus 150mm bearing each end. I've not been able to find anything that I can hire to support both walls as well as spanning over a kitchen worktop on the inside. Can...

    Smooth uneven paint

Wall was freshly plastered but was not a great job and was rather uneven, although this could not be seen under normal lighting conditions. The wall was painted and it was only when 2 wall lights were installed that it became apparent the wall was not smooth at all. My first attempt to correct...

Dot and dab over metal mesh?

Can I dot and dab over the metal mesh in the photo? Behind the mesh is half block wall and half timber. If I can't dot and dab over this what would I need to do so I can? Thanks

    Where is the leak?

Thanks everyone, I'll get a roofer to check out the lead and the weathering collar.

    Where is the leak?

That was the only bit that caught my eye, just wasn't sure if it was supposed to look like that or not. There wasn't loads of water running down so I guess it could be a pretty small crack.

    Where is the leak?

100% not a waste water leak, there is nothing above where the water is apart from the straight pipe going out through the ceiling and then through the roof.

    Where is the leak?

Hi, While renovating my toilet room I notices the soil pipe had a small amount of water running down the outside of it, at the time there was heavy rain. The section where I noticed the water is above any connections in to the soil pipe and from that point it goes up into the loft and out...

Cutting a slot in the bottom of a door?

All done @JobAndKnock, I followed your advice and it worked brilliantly. Thanks

Cutting a slot in the bottom of a door?

Thanks @foxhole that is what I was originally intending on doing but started second guessing myself and thinking it was not the right way to do it.

Cutting a slot in the bottom of a door?

Unless I can stand 2m in the air with the door held vertically I would need to hold the router on it's side (rotated 90 degrees) and I'm not sure that's advisable with a router? I've never seen one being used in this orientation before so I assume it's either not easy to handle, or unsafe, or both?

Cutting a slot in the bottom of a door?

Hi, I need to cut a slot in the bottom of a 35mm thick oak door (it's a 838x1981mm door) to accommodate an anti warp insert. The slot needs to be 10mm wide and 17mm deep. I'm trying to work out the best way to do this but not having mush luck. I've looked at slot cutting router bits but most...

dot and dab external wall the best solution?

Just been doing a bit of searching around, has anyone used one of these damp proof membrane systems that can be dot and dabbed over? I assume if they can be used in basements with damp walls then it would stop any issues on a dry wall with no problems? Would this also prevent any cold spots and...

dot and dab external wall the best solution?

Hi, So I have a landing wall that needs to be skimmed and a window reveal built up as an old wooden sash has been replaced by a upvc window and it's much smaller and thinner than the old window. Now the situation is a bit complex as we have a solid, non cavity, wall where the window is, this...

    Joining joists together, building code

Thanks @Bouy that's interesting. So am I right in concluding that if someone was to join some joists together in this fashion they should be getting a structural engineer to calculate how this would need to be done. So in most cases it's cheaper, simpler and better practice to just replace the...

    Joining joists together, building code

Thanks all, this looks like it's a complicated issue and not as straight forward as I thought it would be. It's only 1 out of a list of about 17 issues so I think I won't look into this one any further unless there is a need to in the future. The other issues are far more clear cut.

    Joining joists together, building code

Joists by DartArms posted 31 Mar 2021 at 10:17 PM OK so here's a diagram. Along with the other joists that are full length it's supporting the floor in the room above. I'm not planning on taking anyone to small claims, I just want to cover my back if the builder was to take me to court as we...
