Options for painting/treating dark hardwood banisters and handrail

We moved into a house recently that has a very dark hardwood staircase. We are keen to lighten it up however possible - ideally it would be light oak but given the dark hardwood I guess it's not possible to "lighten" the wood and we are looking at painting? Would welcome some expert opinion...

    Replacing Bathroom Pull Cord

Hi All, Our bathroom pull cord switch has given up the ghost and needs replacing. The pull cord switches on the bathroom light and an extractor fan (which also has it's own isolation switch). I've taken the cover off the existing pull cord and bought a replacement and just want a little...

Underfloor Heating with Engineered Wood Flooring

Wonder if any one can offer any advice based on practical experience? We're about to start having an extension built on the rear of our house to create a 55m2 open plan lounge/kitchen, diner space. Plan is to have a wet underfloor heating system throughout as the sole heat source for the space...

Possible Boiler Replacement - Worcester 28CDi

Thanks for the detailed and open response. Being a total plumbing Luddite, what's the advantage of a system boiler for my needs over a combi? I assume I then need to factor in a hot water tank in the loft?

Possible Boiler Replacement - Worcester 28CDi

Hi, We moved into our current house in June (detached 4 beds with 2 x bathrooms) and have inherited what looks like an aging Worcester 28CDi (old style as below) I have no idea how old it is but I know the previous owner had a British Gas maintenance plan so I assume it was serviced...

Replace double dimmer with double switch - help

Hi all, I'm trying to find the fault with our lounge lights which were installed a few years ago. Recently one stopped working and a few months later the 2nd one gave up too. At first I thought it was the light fittings themselves. I have replaced these and the problem remains. The old...

Changing Boiler Timer - Is this safe - Pics included?

Well I powered off the mains and swapped it over - all works fine except the on position on the Grasslin switches the CH off and the off position switches the CH on. I guess I need to swap wires 3 and 5 over? Paul

Changing Boiler Timer - Is this safe - Pics included?

To give you a bit more background, all the electrics were replaced and brought up to std when we moved into the house last yr. The plumber asked me specifically to have a socket next to the location that the new boiler would be installed, so I am 99.9% confident it's only powered by one plug...

Changing Boiler Timer - Is this safe - Pics included?

I appreciate the concern, but if I have physically removed the boiler plug from the wall socket, is there anything else that could possibly be powering it?

Changing Boiler Timer - Is this safe - Pics included?

Hi, I have a Baxi 105HE boiler with a Diehl 884 Type 1K Timer. It would appear that the timer is broken as the CH will not come on regardless of the setting on the timer. The boiler is working fine and providing hot water on demand. I have now acquired a new timer (Grasslin) and wish to...

Diehl 884 Timer on Baxi 105 HE Boiler

Diehl 884 Timer on Baxi 105 HE Boiler

I am a total novice so is this safe for me to perform? How should the wires be joined? I think there was some kind of spade connecter on the end from what I saw?

Diehl 884 Timer on Baxi 105 HE Boiler

Hi, I have a Baxi 105 HE boiler installed at home for hot water and central heating. The central heating is controlled via an electronic timer, and seems to have stopped working entirely. The boiler is fine and provides hot water on demand, but even if I switch the timer to ignore the...
