    Kitchen sink cleaning

Apologies if this isn't the correct place for this topic. I have recently been painting and decorating and have been using the kitchen sink to clean paint brushes, tools, etc. The problem is I think I've stained the surface by doing so. I think this is a ceramic sink. See pic below: I have...

Vinyl Matt Paint - not the result I was expecting

Hi all, In my last home I had used retail matt paint and I found that it would easily get smudged / stained. So when I was going to paint my new home, a few people recommended that I use trade vinyl matt instead. I was told it had additives that would reduce the smudges / stains and make it...

    Painting doors

What size tin of Zinsser Bin should I get to prime all 8 doors?

    Painting doors

It doesn't look like they are either varnished or stained. Just looks like bare wood to me. Interesting. Is there a reason for that? I normally just dip them straight into the paint.

    Painting doors

I have 8 doors in total to paint. All the doors are currently unpainted, as per pic below. I have two questions: 1) I am planning to use Dulux Trade Undercoat (oil based), followed by Dulux Trade Satinwood (also oil based). Do I need to use a primer before applying the undercoat? 2) What...

    Door frame primer paint

@opps thanks. So if I apply some of that oil based undercoat, will that help to achieve a more even surface? I know in an ideal world this would have been completely sanded down, but I've got 4 of these frames in total and it's been hard work getting it this far! So I'm just trying to protect my...

Cheers. Is this one OK? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009W68SPW

    Door frame primer paint

I have just scraped off a few layers of paint from this door frame: I've not been able to fully strip the paint off, and it's not completely flat - but I'm not really looking for a perfect result. However, I was wondering what primer to use to achieve a half decent finish? Eventually, I am...

    Fill wall damage around architrave

Just had some new architrave fitted, the old one was decades old and when it was pulled off it caused some of the plaster to come off too. What's the best way to fill this in? Ideally I want to achieve a seamless finish as possible.

Stain coming through after mist coat

I have applied two mist coats and this stain is still coming through. I have no idea what it is. Its not raised or anything. Am I right in thinking that I need to use something like Zinsser Bin to block this stain before I apply the top coat?

Stripping gloss from door frames and skirting

The problem is the gloss paint is so thick in some areas that it looks ugly. I guess I would just have to sand those areas down. Can I apply this satinwood paint directly to the unpainted door (as shown in the pic) - or do I need to use some kind of undercoat first?

Mist coat paint lines - is it normal?

@opps as I am using a vinyl matt as my finish coat, should I be doing 2 coats of this, or can I get away with just one? It's also white, so I'm thinking it should be OK in one coat. Or should I do a "full fat" coat using the contract matt and then one coat of the vinyl matt?

Stripping gloss from door frames and skirting

I am planning on painting some door frames and skirting using a water based paint (something like Dulux Trade Satinwood). The problem is they currently have gloss paint on them. I have tried scraping this off using a heat gun, but that was a slow process and the smell was giving me a headache...

Mist coat paint lines - is it normal?

I cannot believe the amount of conflicting info out there on this topic! I have seen many people recommend to use a "contact matt" as a mist coat - and that's the advice I went with in the end. In addition, many people have specifically said NOT to use vinyl matt as a mist coat - see this...

Mist coat paint lines - is it normal?

Sorry to ask a silly question, but if I understand this correctly that means for every 9 litres of paint I should add 1 litre of water. Thus, for half the amount of paint, i.e. 4.5 litres, I should add 500ml of water, right?

Mist coat paint lines - is it normal?

Hi guys, thanks for the responses. To be honest, there are so many differing opinions on this. I did watch a few YouTube videos where people were doing anything from between 30% to 80%, and all still achieving good results. I just decided to go with 50/50 to go with a middle ground ratio. So...

Mist coat paint lines - is it normal?

I have attempted my first mist coat today. I am using Leyland Trade contract matt emulsion, with a 12" medium pile microfibre roller. I used a mixing ratio of 50/50 for this. As you can see in the pic below, there are paint lines where I have applied the roller. Is that normal? You might...

    Matt emulsion for mist coat

I am looking to do a mist coat on fresh plaster. I purchased the following "Leyland Retail Matt" emulsion: https://www.screwfix.com/p/leyland-retail-retail-matt-brilliant-white-emulsion-paint-10ltr/7291v But then I noticed a lot of people mentioning "Contract Matt", i.e. this one...

    Skimmed walls with PVA (possibly)

I believe the general consensus is that it's not a good idea to use PVA as a sealer on newly skimmed walls. I have recently had all the walls reskimmed but I cannot get hold of the builder, to ask him whether he used PVA or not. I found a bottle of PVA lying around, which raised my suspicions...

    Chair mat frame ideas

Hi all, I am looking to start a side hustle - making office chair mats from laminate flooring. I would be looking to serve the local area on a small-scale basis to begin with. If you're familiar with chair mats, you will know that the regular chair mats that are made from plastic eventually...
