Strengthen loft joints with perpendicular battens

Thanks that's good to know. Would that be in new build homes? From what I can tell modern roofs are typically rated for max 25kg per sq long term.

    Tear in roof lining

I was up in the loft today and noticed a few tears/holes in the roof lining. Havn't noticed any water coming in so the tiles appear to be doing their job, but want to address this before we head into Winter. I found this video which looks doable: Is that the best way to repair something like...

Strengthen loft joints with perpendicular battens

I am boarding some of my loft for storage and am a bit confused on the best way to strengthen the existing joists. I have read conflicting advice, some say you can add additional joists on top and perpendicular to the exsting ones. Others say do them parallel and some say increase the height of...

Change light fitting connected to two switches

We are attempting to change the light fitting in our lounge that is connected to two light switches. It has two brown, two blue and an earth wire. However the light fitting we have purchased only has room for 1 of each wire. We have looked at a number of guides online and some say it is fine to...

Cooker hood extractor fan blowing not sucking

Thanks. I have taken a deeper look and removed the ducting from the top of the hood. See attached picture. The install manual says use 150mm - 125mm diameter ducting. The connector part is 150mm width, in then tapers in and the inner ducting appears to be around 115mm. The actual entrance...

Cooker hood extractor fan blowing not sucking

We have a range master oven cooker hood that has an extractor fan venting outside. I have confirmed there is no blockage in the ducting to the outside and I have made sure the ducting is fully secure to the top of the hood exit hole. But for some reason the fan seems to be partially blowing...

Unable to adjust temperature of unvented hot water cylinder

Ah ok that's really useful thanks. I think I understand how it works now.

Unable to adjust temperature of unvented hot water cylinder

I guess I have a misunderstanding of how the boiler the cylinder system works. I assumed the return temp on the boiler in this scenario would be basically the same temp as the water coming from the cylinder. Does the cylinder not send its cold water to the boiler to heat up, then the boiler...

Unable to adjust temperature of unvented hot water cylinder

Thanks. I assumed that the return temp would be lower if the cylinder was set lower. I can't quite get my head around how the return temp on the boiler gets up to 65deg if the cylinder stops calling for heat at 50deg. Am I wrong in my understanding of how this system would work. 1. Cylinder...

Unable to adjust temperature of unvented hot water cylinder

I have a Heatrae Sadia premier plus PP250B unvented hot water cylinder and a Vaillant ecoTec plus 618 system boiler. I want to adjust the temperature of the hot water cylinder to save a bit of money, but the controls appear to have no effect. I want to set the temperature to around 50/55ish...

    Grundfos pump flashing green LED

Oh that's helpful thanks. I do not know exactly when it was installed. We moved in March 2022, hard to say exactly when the UFH was installed during development. Maybe sometime in 2021. Definitely interested in seeing the curve. Do you have a link to the manual for the newer AS Flex model...

    Grundfos pump flashing green LED

I have a Grundfos UPM3 Flex AS pump for my UFH system. The lights on it are as follows: LED 1: Flashing green maybe every second LED 2: off LED 3: Solid yellow LED 4: Solid yellow LED 5: off I understand the yellow LED's indicate the speed/performance setting it is set to and I can change this...

What counts as a cold spot with UFH

I purchased a infrared thermometer to monitor the surface temperature of my floor with the UFH turned on. I have been monitoring it for a few days in the same spots and recording the data every 2 hours during the day. It seems I have a few hot/cold spots in locations I would expect there to be...

Most efficient way to run modulating boiler with UFH to prevent cycling

I do have a decent electric oil radiator that I can use. I'll compare the energy usage against the boiler over a couple of weeks and see which is more cost effective. Would prefer to use the UFH as it is a more comfortable heat and it keeps the temperature at a more steady level. But if it works...

Most efficient way to run modulating boiler with UFH to prevent cycling

Thanks yeah I have been over all the Heatgeek articles. I will measure the burn times accurately tomorrow and see how long it actually burns before cycling. 10mins was a rough guess from what I have been able to observe so far going back and forth to the boiler between working at my desk.

Most efficient way to run modulating boiler with UFH to prevent cycling

With my current settings for the heating partial load, flow temp and three UFH zones active the burn times can be hours before it cycles. With just my study UFH zone active with the same heating partial load and flow temps set it can cycle initially after 30mins, then every 10mins perhaps. I...

Most efficient way to run modulating boiler with UFH to prevent cycling

I have a Vaillant ecoTec plus 618 boiler. The minimum heat output of the boiler is 4kw. I have UFH downstairs with 5 zones. Some of these zones are very small, like the utility room and the study. I think the UFH manifold is set to around 32/35°C. The house is a well insulated new build and...

Flow temperatures below 50deg with a hot water cylinder

We do have an elictrical immersion heater but no temperature controls on it, a simple on/off switch. But yes I could set the cylinder to around 65 with the boiler flow at 50. Then stick the immersion on once a week for a couple of hours, have looked at automated ways of turning the immersion on...
