Underpinning - mesh fibres in concrete

Norcon, I don't want to burst your bubble, but I may not have written the post clear enough. The structural engineer said not to put any rebar, as access would be difficult. He said fibres only............ I think I will stick in rebar regardless and would rather it be stronger than...

    How to insulate?

I stay in a house like that shape. Late 1800's 1.5 storey croft. Personally, plasterboard off is the only way to achieve the correct compactness and draught proof method. I have 150mm deep trusses so I put in 100mm Kingspan, then stuck up new plasterboard. Sorted. :)

Underpinning - mesh fibres in concrete

My thoughts too. I'm a mechanical engineer so it did not make sense to me. Would u install a rebar into on. Excavated slot and push through into the soil next to it? Cement that area and excavate carefully around the rebat? Once that is cemented in, they could be linked together? Its...

Underpinning - mesh fibres in concrete

Wow, I never realised that my topic could be such a discussion point. I contacted the technical dept in one of the uk's largest manufacturer of fibres and said that I'd been advised to use fibres in my underpinning. The chap had to discuss with his technical director along with others in the...

Underpinning - mesh fibres in concrete

Hi all. My architect has called up for mesh fibre concrete to be used to underpin one of my gable walls (building an extension alongside it). I've never used this product before, nor can get hold of it locally from the usual building merchants (Jewsons, Travis Perkins, etc). Has anyone...

Building a foundation around the mains electric cable

That is perfect. Thank you! I was worried that it may have been a total show stopper! I'll see about sleeving it, as knowing my typical luck, the electric company will want to change it soon after my exension is built!

Building a foundation around the mains electric cable

i'm looking at building an extension and have came across the main electric cable coming into the house from the outside poles exactly where I want to build my extension on top of. I've heard that some builders have built the foundations around this cable, similar to feeding through pipes /...

Moving an external boiler into an outhouse

Simple question really (!?), but can I move my Grant External Oil boiler (condensing) into an outhouse? I'm looking at building an extension and need to re-locate it. To keep the boiler out of the elements, to reduce the number of times the frost stat kicks the boiler in and for practical...

    Fire Resistant window frames

Hi. I'm planning an extension right up to my boundary line. Beyond that boundary is fields upon fields. My local Building Control guy said that I require to have the whole wall fire resistant, including any glass that I may put in (obviously I'm not overlooking any properties). I've been...

SDS Plus drill bit extensions? Longer than 1000mm?

Opps! Yeh, it should be 10mm! The only ones that I can see are core bit extensions and SDS extensions with chucks on the end. That could work, but I'd have to drill the majority of the hole to drift the chuck through!

SDS Plus drill bit extensions? Longer than 1000mm?

Hello. I'm trying to run a cable in my house through 600mm Granite. Due to the heights, I've to go up at a steep angle. I've got a 10m x 1000mm long SDS bit that is just shy of say 200mm before popping out the other end. I can't really drill from the other end thanks to the roof pitch...

Draught excluder routed into door frame

I've spotted a draught excluder that was routed into the door frame, so that the door closes against the stop as normal, but is seal around the perimeter of the door. Similar to a Intumescent Strip, but the seal was a thin strip of rubber that was angled, so the door slides past it, creating...

    Hand Cleaners - recomendations?

I keep forgetting about using barrier cream, as I'm the sort who picks up a job at home, then that leads me onto something completely different. When it's wash up time, that's when I say 'who the eck am I gonna get this off?' I sort of remembered the name yesterday and by the power...

    Hand Cleaners - recomendations?

I'm running dry of my special hand cleaner that removes even dried in bitumen on my hands. I don't know the name of the stuff, as it was given to my by an old friend. The lable is worn off. It's a clear liquid, but is a bit like paint thinners, but doesn't dry as quick. I've tried doing...

Identifying if I have 3 phase or not

Thanks a lot for the replies. :) I thought as much, when I looked at the power cables that it's single phase. I had a look around and see that those invertors are ssoooo much cheaper than getting Scottish power to send me a huge bill for converting the power lines. No much point for just...

Identifying if I have 3 phase or not

Ask and ye shall receive. :) Here's the contents of my meter box. Here's the contents of the meter box on the outside of my steading (power to the steading itself all comes the house supply) One of the power lines I see that there are 2 cables, so guess only single...

Identifying if I have 3 phase or not

I knew someone would ask the obvious of a pic, but it was dark by the time I got home last night. I'll get a few pics tonight and post them up. White meter - what I mean is a white box, that contains the meter and main cabling. I'm certainly not on Economy 7.

Identifying if I have 3 phase or not

Hi all. I'm looking to install a 2 post car ramp in the coming months in my garage. I see that they are usually powered by 3-phase supplies. My question is, is all households supplied by 3-phase to the meter box, then coverted to single phase, from the meter onwards? I stay out in the...
