    Small leak from Potterton boiler

Thanks both. How hard to replace? Power down boiler, shut off cold water supply, drain, replace and recharge? Anything else?

    Small leak from Potterton boiler

I’ve got a small leak from my boiler - dripping off the bottom of this valve - which is on the central heating flow pipe. Anyone know what kind of valve this is and what fixing it might involve? Thanks Keith

    Connect into existing soil pipe

Ok thanks. I’d bought a 57mm cutter expecting to fit a mcalpine fitting - so that might work. Time to browse the Screwfix catalogue I think.

    Connect into existing soil pipe

Progress of a sort. I’ve cleared the mortar - expecting to break through into a clear pipe. But there’s some kind of blanking plate in there. Is that to be expected - and any suggestions how to deal with it. It feels pretty thin…

    Connect into existing soil pipe

Thanks for this. I’m making some progress with drilling out so I’ll keep trying that. There is a drain just below the stack that might give me access should any lumps fall in. Taking it slow… If it all goes wrong I can’t say I wasn’t warned. K

    Connect into existing soil pipe

Ok thanks for this. I’ll have a go with a drill, start of small and see what the material is like. K

    Connect into existing soil pipe

Morning everyone I need to connect a new 40mm sink waste into this soil stack - due to the fall I need I need to do this in amongst the existing connections. I’d originally thought I could use a strap boss just above the existing joints - at about the 23” mark on the level. But because of the...

    Screws for kitchen wall cabinet

Hi. I’ll be fitting an ikea kitchen in our new extension shortly. Wall construction is timber frame w plasterboard - I’ve got the location of the studs marked already. Studs are at 600mm. Ikea uses a hanging rail for wall cabinets. Is six screws into timber sufficient for the weight of a run...

Another asbestos floor tile question - with a difference

Thanks for the replies. Slab removal is not optional - we're taking away a crap old sunroom with a concrete slab and then excavating to allow us to build a new insulated floor slab for a proper extension. I've sent samples for testing - hopefully back Monday. I know the tiles are easy to pop...

Another asbestos floor tile question - with a difference

Hi everyone, I've crossed paths with 60s asbestos containing floor tiles in a previous house. Now - in our new house - we've knocked down an old wooden sun room and unfortunately encountered dreaded 9 inch square tiles on bitumen. I've sent samples of tile and bitumen off to be tested. But I...

    Renovate solid wood flooring

Can't turn it over easily - has grooves on the bottom. But thicknesser is a good idea. I've never used one - but assume they produce chips rather than dust. I'll have a look at hire options. Presumably the thicknesser does the first pass - and then some sanding required afterwards for the right...

    Renovate solid wood flooring

Hi, I've been donated some solid wood T&G flooring. Trying to work out how usable it is. It is covered in a very glossy finish - polyurethane finish probably? But it also has quite a lot of dinks, scratches etc. The shine is also a bit much. Is it feasible to strip the surface treatment off? A...

    Renovating existing UPVC double glazing

We moved into our house last year. We've noticed some issues with the double glazed UPVC windows at the front of the house. - firstly - crazy whistling noises when it's windy. It's so loud we've had several night with little sleep. - then - general condition of the plastic sills and trip...

Asbestos watch - looking for sense check

Thanks for replies - I'm talking about the foreground material - agree, it's probably just some kind of concrete. It did occur to me that maybe - at some point - this was the original upper surface, and then somebody then overlaid it with more concrete. I suppose my question was - would...

    Slab for new shed

Thanks for this - I've ended up casting the slab this week with DPM underneath. Haha - first time trying to do something like this (it's about 5m x 4m) so it was an interesting experience when the van turned up and dumped the concrete within about 10 minutes. But I'm getting there. I'm hoping...

Asbestos watch - looking for sense check

Morning all (and what a lovely morning!), we've recently moved into a 60s house - and the back garden is about 80% covered in concrete. Our plan is to lift it all, and eventually get the back area turfed. This morning I started lifting some bits of concrete - and found something a little...

    Slab for new shed

So - to follow up on this original thread (that nobody responded to :)). I've decided best thing would be to cast a new slab - 75-100mm off the existing concrete. So - a question. Should I install a DPM between the existing concrete and the slab which is yet to be cast? Or, given I'm getting a...

    Slab for new shed

Building on a previous thread - I have an existing large flat concrete slab (used to be the floor of a now demolished garage) slightly under grade of adjacent garden. I am putting a new shed/workshop there - and am considering casting a new raised slab (100mm or so) on which the shed can sit...
