    Kitchen confusion

Thanks - I'll take a look at those when the time comes. Only said gu10s because that's what we've had previously and liked them. I wouldn't have said we used them as functional lights, more as an ambience when dimmed. The under cabinet lights are the important ones when cooking , together with...

    Kitchen confusion

Sorry - this is going to sound odd but what's basically happened is we've had a new consumer unit fitted (and moved), new sockets, new down lights in bathroom done by an electrician. I wasn't at home during the work so basically had a phonecall to say the electrician wasn't happy finishing...

    Kitchen confusion

Ok - to be precise I've applied the first mist coat to the plaster. Not much progress, I know. I've pulled down the cables to expose some previously hidden wires. It's not a pretty sight and I'm thinking I'll need an electrician tbh.

    Kitchen confusion

So today I bought a multimeter. Having decorated we're now ready to replace the lights. Can anyone help with how I can identify the wires? Thanks

    Kitchen confusion

The colours are (from left to right): one earth (yellow/green) connected to a block, black, yellow, two blacks twisted together. Yes - I have learnt from my mistake and will write down a sketch in future! No wires are hidden. However, there is another ceiling rose about 12ft away that I...

    Kitchen confusion

I've done something silly and now can't get our kitchen lights working. A month or so ago we had our artex ceiling throughout the downstairs skimmed by a plasterer. Before he arrived, I removed all of the light fittings so that he could do the job properly. They were such horrible outdated...

    Bad smell from plasterboard

This morning I'm convinced it's more of a damp cardboard smell than it is tobacco. Wondering whether it's the effect of applying a watery mist coat to plasterboard.

    Bad smell from plasterboard

So we've recently moved into a 1985 built (Bovis) house. The previous owner bought from new and was a pipe smoker. The smell wasn't too bad though when we moved in. We have recently been removing wallpaper from the hall, stairs and landing. The paper had been put straight onto the...

    Help with dispute...

Yes - the amount I'm holding back is in the hundreds not tens. I don't have the knowledge required to know how much it will cost to put right (although may go down the route of obtaining a quote as suggested) so the money I'm holding back I suppose isn't really intended to reflect the cost...

    Help with dispute...

Sorry - what I didn't make clear is that the exit position of the flue on the external wall has not changed at all. In other words, the flue goes from interior to exterior at the same position. So why alter the length of the external flue so drastically? Especially when it nows causes problems...

    Help with dispute...

Ok - thanks again. Really good to get your opinions. Lets face it - the majority of problems I've listed are small things that could easily be put right. The two that concern me are inhibitor and flue. Inhibitor - I hear what you say about it not neccesarily being that important...

    Help with dispute...

That's very helpful - thank you. Sounds like a very reasonable way forward. I should have asked this in the original post but the one other problem which strikes me as a bigger job/problem than the rest, is the positioning of the flue. Any thoughts on this? Surely steam entering the...

    Help with dispute...

Hi I hope this is the right/ok place to ask for help with this. Last October we used a firm to carry out work to our property: install new gas cooker and move a boiler further into the understairs cupboard. I am now in a dispute with the firm who are requesting full settlement of the...

I've used HGs Impregnating Sealer for lots of jobs and as they're a Dutch company they may well sell it around Europe.

    Odd noisy neighbour water problem

Thanks dextrous - that's a very good idea which I hadn't thought of. Even though I could probably manage the job, I wouldn't fiddle with other peoples plumbing so would certainly be using a plumber to do the job.

RCD problem discovered and cooker installation query

Thanks for the explanation Steve. You're last comment basically sums up what I felt without really fully understanding the situation. I'll see if he can replace the RCD and if not pay up for the work done, get a certificate for what they did and say thank you very much! Cheers
