    Fixed wiring test

Would I also be able to do the CU main earth myself? I've installed CUs in pre-part-P days and never had any trouble with them (they have been inspected for PIRs).

    Fixed wiring test

I don't see the danger. The Water bonding is in 4mm, but is under cover all throught the run. Consumer Unit main earth is 10mm. I think that £217 is a bit much for that work.

    Fixed wiring test

Just had a house fail one of these for: Upgrade the main earth conductor to 16mm Upgrade the main equipotential bonding to the water I don't see why I need to do it seeing as both the bondings were up to regs when installed,, even if reg have changed since.

    Rewiring Hair Straightners

You need to open the case were the wire goes in. Then prepare the long bit of wire you cut off in the same way as the existing wires. Take out the stump wire and fit the long bit. Or get someone who's done basic electrics to do it!

    messy solder joint

The old man and I have been trying to learn the dark arts of soldering copper tube and fittings. We can make a water-tight joint but it looks messy and the solder doesn't get all the way round the joint. Where are we going wrong?

Mount Bathroom Shaver Socket in Patress?

Why? Isn't the point of shaver sockets that they have an isolating tranny and so don't need any additional (RCD) protection?

    Adding an additional Circuit breaker

Have you got a split-load board? Ovens are normally on the non-RCD side of things as they can have quite a high earth leakage during normal use. Take a full picture of the board. What size cable are you planning on using for your oven? Have you planned for a DP isolator (at least 45A)?

Gas purge required after property left empty

They must surely (attempt to) equaliase beacuse of Brownian motion of the molecules. Take the leaking pipe as being a semi-permeable membrane, and you can see that there will be a diffusion of gas out and air in.

Gas purge required after property left empty

Only for complete combustion to CO2 + H2O. If there was less air the gas (methane) could still burn, but incompletely leading to the formation of CO. I think what is being asked is what is the minimum % oxygen required in a gas/air mixture for there to be any combustion at all, however...

Gas purge required after property left empty

Ah! I see what you are saying. I was confused with people talking about 100% gas, which as you have clarified refers to the gas comming out of the jet rather than the combustion mixture (which cannot be 100% gas for it to burn). I've no idea what the ratio of gas to air would have to be for...

Gas purge required after property left empty

If it is 'in air' then it cannot be 100% gas by definition as there is air in there! You couldn't light a match in 100% gas as there would be no oxygen for it to burn!
