    Insulate wood framed box bay

Is it OK to leave a gap between the celotex and the outside facing (25mm)? I can't really get a full thickness in there, due to the nails from the outside tiles - gap is 100mm, otherwise could I use dritherm all the way through and then a 25mm celotex board over the batons?

    Insulate wood framed box bay

Hi Morning all. I'm trying to figure out the best approach to insulate an upstairs box bay (house is circa 1910). Double glazing has been fitted, but nothing has been done to the wall below and it is very cold and since removing a bay window seat a bit draughty as well. Construction is (was)...

    Location of cistern

Now here's a question. I need to swivel the 90 degree waste pipe round a bit, which means removing that AAV (I could re-attach to the other side), but do I need it? Since that bathroom was put in we've had a ensuite put in the loft room above and as part of that they re-directed the soil pipe...

    Location of cistern

I've got a bit of height and can probably have more as the wall it's going on slopes back a bit. Anyway so far so good - primary test was a success, I've done it with no direct 90 degree turns. Will be getting a new slimline cistern to replace the current one and will also recess it half a...

    Location of cistern

I’ll be getting my son to perform a full ‘end to end’ test. :)

    Location of cistern

Thanks all. I guess I can rig it up and see how it performs, bathroom is in bits at the moment so plenty of scope for testing...

    Location of cistern

Is it acceptable to locate the cistern somewhere other than behind the toilet? Or won't physics allow it? In this case I want to put a concealed cistern to the side of the toilet and have a pipe run make 2 turns and then into the back of the toliet. Ta.

    Powerfloat concrete issue.

I've recently had a 40m2 slab of concrete laid, in the my kitchen/diner, which was powerfloated. After a period of time I then sealed it with Watco Powerfloat Concrete sealer (this was recommended to me elsewhere). What a disaster - It hasn't adhered properly and has now started pealing. I...

Top Hung Velux window hinge adjustment

Hi I probably need to call the installer back, but is anyone aware of a way to adjust the position of the sash within the frame of a new-ish (1 year) Velux top hung roof window? I'm finding it difficult to close on the fully closed lock position and on closer inspection I can see that the sash...

    Fitting sisal stair runner

If it's any consolation I will probably be replacing it. We've had some building work done and it's got a bit dirty, with brick dust, plaster etc. We plan to get a runner installed up the stairs and into the loft. I need something that can easily turn corners and as it's fiddly I'll get someone...

    Fitting sisal stair runner

Just thought I'd follow up... After 2 years of use the stair runner is still in good shape and has not stretched at all, it was already backed with latex so I guess that stopped that from happening... No one has died or been remotely injured.

Redring 3 in 1 hot water heater

Hi all Anyone have any experiences of this product. I found two reviews on Amazon which say it's hard to fit and doesn't get hot enough. The alternative I think would be the Insinkerator version. Thanks Andy

Whirlpool fridge freezer not auto defrosting

Hi I have a side by side Whirlpool fridge freezer that is not auto defrosting (model number 8586 150 15002). I replaced the thermostat unit but that didn't help. I am going to test the heater element for continuity today when I get hold of a tester, but other than that I'm not sure what it...

    Light not on light circuit

Might be a little warm! Thanks all for the input. Glad I don't have to rip up my newly sanded bedroom floorboards to get the light wired up.

    Light not on light circuit

Thanks for that. Sounds like I just need to change the junction box on the end of the spur to an FCU and it's good to go. I might want to plug in a couple of extra items, such as a WiFi router and a NAS. So I just need to keep in mind the power consumption and if it looks like being too much...

    Light not on light circuit

Hi all So I'm in the process of putting in a downstairs toilet and I though I'd make a start by removing all the gubbings from the space to be used (cupboard under the stairs). I plan to ensure everything is accessible for the workman to save some time and mess. Now I obviously need an...

Tap into existing clay sewer pipe

Ah that makes sense. I guess as I'm just moving a downstairs toilet from one location to another I'm not increasing any discharge so can leave the water board out of it. Just building control to sort out. Cheers

Tap into existing clay sewer pipe

Thanks all for the advise, sounds like it's quite straightforward. With the water board permission, does that mean they are responsible for the waste pipes that are within the boundary of my land?

Tap into existing clay sewer pipe

Hi I thought I had asked this question a couple of years, but cannot find the post... Anyway I want to tap into the existing clay waste pipe that runs under our house. The existing stack is at the back of the house where the current waste goes to. It then runs under the house and on into...
