Following the very wet winter, we had water damage on the exterior west wall of the house. Water-soaked wall inside! Problem has been found in the chimney stack. Very high up. Thankfully my builder has rebuilt the stack from the ground up. Initial problem solved. My question is how long will it...

    Blowing elements SMEG oven

We have a SMEG oven which we inherited when we bought the house 7 years ago. Last week the element failed, and tripped the fuse box. I diagnosed is to faulty element. Bought a new one online and fitted it. It Lasted 30 seconds, and tripped the fuse box again. Does this suggest faulty wiring...

Huge success: work-around, inexpensive secondary glazing

Winter is setting in properly now, and I've noticed that our house is getting chilly with endless drafts from the old-fashioned, sash windows. Hi Ian, Yeah I guessed that it was simply a "pointer" the the part needed. Thanks ;-) In fact, maybe you can help solve a riddle for me? It's very hard to get access inside - mostly because the boiler is build into a cupboard recess, so I cannot see very easily, let alone bet my big hands...

de dietrich dishwasher not rinsing properly

Strange, seems reasonable on the bottom level, but the top level often has residual lime-looking bits on the dishes and glasses. Any ideas? I have taken out all the removable plastic parts inside the machine - the arm and everything to ensure they are clear inside to allow for easy water flow.

Alpha CB24 Boiler won't fire-up. Alternate flashing lights

Hello all, We've inherited an Alpha CB24 28 Boiler. Lived here 18 months. Yesterday, I noticed it wouldn't "fire-up". It showed alternate, regular flashing neon lights. I checked and was concerned to see that the pressure was very low (approx 0.3 bar) So filled up from the loop, it's now 1.2...

Hairline crack in Traditional old radiators

Is this the same principal as using Fernox F4 Leak Sealer stuff that my pluming suppler sold me saying it'll work. Haven't tried yet, but another friend cast doubt that it would, but wasn't 100% sure about it.

The genius of Milliput: Saved the day!

Slightly over-cautious to say the least. Do you know what Milliput is made of? It's epoxy resin: like all epoxy material: once it's set, it becomes totally inert. Of course if I was a professional plumber, charging money for this, it may be against regulations. But I'm fixing this myself!

The genius of Milliput: Saved the day!

Well, we did initially, but it got mashed up" during the many attempts to re-screw the housing back in. Seems fine without it, but will cause problems if we need to take the element out in the future I guess.

The genius of Milliput: Saved the day!

The Genius of Milliput: Saved us £100's - and negates need for new immersion tank. This is more of a report on a success rather than a request for help now. Briefly: 1. Bought a new house: amongst many other problems, the thermostat kept failing in the immersion tank. (evidence of an...

Hairline leaks in inaccessible lead pipes

Thanks for the tips ChrisR and Onetap, I can see many furrowed brows when lead pipes are mentioned, not surprisingly! Your comments about dry rot and replaced joists are well-made. I have asked local plumbers to price up replacing the whole system. It's an inevitable job I can see. But...
