    Toilet cistern 'runs on'

When I flush the toilet (dual button cistern) it flushes but seems to take a long to refill and as it does so, water continues running into the pan. Sometimes this can go on for several minutes until the valve shuts. And on occasion, it fails to stop unless I flush it a second time.

    Pond pump tripping RCD?

I’m not sure how to test the pump itself in situ (it’s hard-wired) but I guess an obvious thing to do is physically take it off-circuit and see if the trip still occurs.

    Pond pump tripping RCD?

Yeah it was the sparky who put in the two RCDs. I thought it seemed unnecessary. I’ve visually inspected everything (with power off) and there’s no loose wires, no corrosion, damaged cable, nothing amiss. I isolated the lights using the MCB and a trip still occurred with them isolated. So the...

    Pond pump tripping RCD?

at the end of the garden, about 40m from the house, is a pond. In the pond is a 320W pump that pumps water up to the top of the garden (4m head) which then runs down a stream to the bottom pond again. From the CU at the house, the supply runs via a RCD through a buried armoured cable to a shed...

System pressure goes from high to low when heating off (E119)

We have a Baxi condensing boiler which works OK, or did. Recently, there have been several instances where the system hasn't come on (no heat and no hot water to taps) because the boiler pressure has dropped, giving an E119 error code. Each time, I have let a bit of water in using the top-up...

    Bosch dishwasher not filling

True. I guess it must be the fill valve. I'll have a look. Would that be testable with a multimeter?

    Bosch dishwasher not filling

Cheers. It has a normal connection but I think it has a solenoid valve inside. Incidentally my wife forgot to to replace the filters just before this problem occurred. I found all sorts in the sump but something may have got deeper into the drain system.

    Bosch dishwasher not filling

Full model number is SGS45E02GB/45 Dishwasher wasn't cleaning and when I examined it I realised the spray arms weren't spraying. The machine was just whirring away and not really doing anything. I investigated further. By running it with the door interlock overridden, I saw that the problem is...

How to cut 20mm thick clay tiles

They are for the floor, to lay onto bare concrete.

How to cut 20mm thick clay tiles

Er, well just that, really. I have a bunch of 'hand made' clay tiles, unglazed, which are around 20mm thick. I'm guessing my contractor's 'score and press' tile cutter might not do the job and that I may need an angle grinder. Anyone any experience with cutting these? Also, should I use...

sealant for raw clay floor tiles?

I've just bought a load of hand-made clay floor tiles, 300 x 300 x 20mm, which are raw fired terra-cotta and need sealing before laying. What is the best stuff to use for sealing them? There seem to be a lot of products on the market and I'm not sure which are good, bad or indifferent.

Is it safe to change fluorescent lamps when the unit is live

Interesting discussion this, although some of it is over my head. Out in my shed, I have an old 4ft tube fitting which still has the push-fit spring loaded caps at each end, no rotation. All metal too. Still works a treat though.

Is it safe to change fluorescent lamps when the unit is live

OK thanks, that's reassuring. I have no idea if there's a ballast. The light fittings are pretty new I think, less than 2 years old.

Is it safe to change fluorescent lamps when the unit is live

I'm talking about the circular tubes in a round ceiling unit. Cutting the power means darkness in the room as both lights are on the same switch so I've simply removed the dead lamp and put a new one in. There seems to be virtually no chance of coming into contact with anything live, but someone...

Efco jet 300A petrol strimmer - how to replace the line?

Thanks. I managed to figure it out. The small black cap unscrew (LH) but was very very tight. I had to use a pair of Gordons to get it to shift.

Efco jet 300A petrol strimmer - how to replace the line?

Having finally got my old strimmer working, I now have the problem that the line is tangled inside the line head/spool reel and won't feed out. Grrrr! Unfortunately, although I can easily unscrew the head from the spindle, I can't find any way of opening it up! On the back of the body...

Efco jet 300A petrol strimmer - won't start

Cheers John. That's helpful. I'll try all that tonight. There is compression - I can feel it when I pull the cord and I can hear the 'phut phut' of the decompression through the exhaust when I pull, even though it doesn't fire.

Efco jet 300A petrol strimmer - won't start

Someone has given me a petrol strimmer, an old Efco Jet 300A. It won't start, and a search online has not thrown up a manual for it, although I found one for a different Efco model. I took the plug out. Looks OK. Brown, not black. Gapped it to 0.7mm. Peered inside the carb, looks OK...
