How to fix a reclaimed roof Slate ?

Hi,I got a reclaimed slate, it has 2 holes from previous nails. It's just the last slate on the edge of the roof near the gutter that I need to replace. From reading up it seems I can use gripfill. Is there any particular way of doing that or shall I just put a couple of blobs of it? Thanks

    Glueing replacement slates

Roofer wants to glue in replacement slates. Not sure I like this idea because: - it will make further repairs in the area difficult because there are now 3 slates glued together. A roofer working on second repair would not know this and would have difficulty determining which slates to remove...

    Re Slate - Issues

Hi - this is my first post here and I was hoping someone could advise. I have recently moved into a 3 bed semi detached dating from the 1930's, the house is slated in good quality Welsh slates but had no 'breathable' membrane. We have just had the slates removed, a membrane fitted...

    Wet verge on cottage

Hello new to forum. We've just found ourselves proud owners a bunch of derelict cottages and are isolating onsite working away during all the madness. The cottages are stone rubble walls, we got the roof done up to the underlayer and are working on fixing the stone supporting the purlins, using...

I have a contractor installing external wall insulation at the back of my house. As part of the job, the roof of the gable end wall needed to be extended by 125 mm (half a slate width). I offered to source and buy the slates. After meeting with the contractors I suggested "There are 19...

    Slate roof abutment question

I'm re-roofing my lean-to workshop at the moment, and it abuts the side wall of my house. It was previously done using profiled double-roman clay tiles and they used a cover flashing for this. When I started the project I had planned on re-using the tiles and I bought a GRP abutment soaker...

    Setting out a slate roof

Hi first a quick introduction. I am a keen DIYer and have been renovating houses in the UK and France for the last 25 years. Two main reasons one to save money but also as a hobbie as i love the hands on experience and looking back at the work i have done. My issue is with a slate roof on a cob...

Old slate roof - loft storage

Hi guys, It's my first post. Recently bought our first period property, a 1920's 3-bed semi still with the original slate roof with no under felt which the surveyor deemed as in sound condition. As with most growing families, storage space is always at a premium & I'm planning to get the loft...

    Repairing cracked roof edge mortar

Hi, I'm looking for advice on repairing the edging mortar on a slate roof. I've attached a couple of photos below to illustrate the problem. It is the edging between the roof slates and a granite gable end wall. The roof is 12 years old. The mortar has cracked along its full length allowing...
