I have the same challenge in my 491 year old cottage, My solution is to use ELV ( 12 volt) in miniature cables to the switches. This can be set into the wall with minimum damage to the walls. If two thin single core wires are used they can be hidden behind the wall paper. Relays controlled by the switched ELV and a bit of logic circuitry will switch the 230 volt to the lamps.
