What is the maxium size MCB that can be connected to 1.5mm wire in free space.

Can 10A be used ?

Thanks

If not, what are 10A MCB's used for ?

you don't say what 1.5 cable, so we'll assume Twin and Earth.

1.5 will take 20A clipped direct with no other derating factors.
we don't usually use it on anything over a 16A breaker though.

It depends on a few more things than just being in "free space"

10A MCBs are generally used for 10 amp circuits.

Andy you could connect a 1.5mm cable no problem, however you need to check what the load capacity of the cable and what is being run on that circuit, you then make the correct selection to ensure protection is correct and neither are overloaded.

You've got that all wrong.

You need to do the current carrying capacity calculations before you even think about connecting the cable to the MCB.

yes it is back to front.

1.5mm T&E wire is there with 13A socket & light connected to it.

and I was just wondering what the maximum size mcb it could be connected to, to protect the cable from being overloaded.

while at the same time being able to plug things like a drill or hoover into the scoket with minimum risk of the MCB tripping

and would this be the lighting circuit that you want to use for a plug socket?

Light switches and fittings are usually rated to 10Amps (Small light fittings to 6Amps) but look at them to check. You mustn't put accessories on a circuit fused to more amps than they are rated to.

You say the cable is in free space. Is this the case all the way from the loft to the fusebox? And is it all in 1.5mm²?

Not forgetting that volts drop will also have an affect on how much power this cable can safely supply.

the wire length is a very short run. (straight down) 1.5mm all the way

Although against the rules, I was considering putting it on it's own MCB hence the question

A short length of 1.5.mm cable, say under five metres, can safely carry up to 16amps, provided it's clipped direct to the wall all the way along its run, and the OPD is an MCB or cartridge fuse, NOT a rewireable fuse, and provided the earthing loop resistance is less than the allowable reading.
