Hi chaps -

Why do we have 110V power tools and not just stick with 240V - would save on messing with transformers etc. Or is this something of a saftey feature.

Thanks

110V uses a centre tapped transformer which means that the maximum p.d. to earth is only 55V compared with 240V.

Goes back a long way

Reminds me of the day when we had Self Changing Gears in to modify some of their gearboxes - the fitter turned up with a 240 V drill and was upset when we told him he could not use it!
We loaned him a large air drill but then his drill bit would not fit as he had turned the morse taper parallel so it would go into the chuck on his 240v drill!

This was in 1984!
