Just wondering as I've not come across this before.

Also included with my replacement speaker unit was a 160Ω resistor at the 3-terminal choc block on the speaker wires.

Why? Who uses a 160Ω resistor with their 16Ω speaker (in an alarm environment) ?

The external speaker (16Ω) is a familar white plastic boxed affair to replace a remote one I'd fitted (an old PC speaker that I thought was robust enough - it lasted a few years). It was just a matter of tidy wiring and different mounting holes and was quickly fitted.

Could it be an "End Of Line" resistor that enables the control panel to test that the cable has not been cut.

Well yes, but by a large margin (1/11th) of the available drive voltage.
I wonder if they'd intended 16Ω (that would be a nice half level).

Anyway, seems as random as I thought. An interesting non-standard (well it is a 5% range) so I'd better file it separate from my bulk resistors.
