I have a 2 gang 2 way switch in my hallway.
One switch controls the light in the hallway.
The other one does not seem to do anything.
Although it looks like it used to be wired to an outside light at the front door.

I want to put back the outside light but can't figure out how to wire it to this switch.

At the back of the swtich are six connections.
On the top labelled L1 L2 and L3 and the same at the bottom but L3 L2 and L1.

There is a three core cable. Black goes to L3 and Red to L2 green/yellow goes to an earth point.

there is an additional core which only has one red cable and this goes to L1.

The lamp I have bought has brown and blue cables and an earth.

So any ideas how to wire this in and be controlled by the un-used switch?

Thanks

Is there another switch in a 2nd location that also switches the hall light?

What makes you think that?

Probably the strapper to the other switch.

Either incoming permanent live or outgoing switched - there'll be a vice-versa at the other switch.

You almost certainly can't, as there almost certainly is no neutral at the switch.

You should spend a bit of time with, (e.g.) the Which? book, and the posts in the FAQ/For Reference section here, boning up on how lighting circuits are wired.......

You'll need to find the lighting circuit loop cable, and run a switch drop from there. And if you don't yet have a multimeter, you should get one.

Sorry, my mistake. There is no earth to the lamp.

And you are right there is a second switch further up the hallway controlling the hallway light too.

Thanks for the tips. Will read the FAQ's

Doesn't change your problem...

Bang goes the miniscule chance that there was a neutral at the switch.
