Can I just clarify the situation? I'll use US terms to make you feel at home...![]()
You say you have one ground wire in the outlet box connected to the socket and one to the box ground terminal itself?
There is one and only one wire connected into the back of the outlet, I still have yet to get back into it to check for a 2nd or 3rd ground wire. My husband says there is a second one floating around in the back, but I did not see that one myself.
Does the ground wire connected to the box ground terminal screw go up into the wall, or does it just hook up to the socket ground terminal?
The ground ( the one that I have seen )is connected to the socket and it is screwed in.
If there are two ground wires coming out of the wall into the outlet box, then connect them both to the outlet's ground terminal, with a third to the box itself.
If there are two, where would the 3rd be? Tucked up somewhere?
As a basic check to see if the property has a correctly wired circuit, if the breaker or fuse protecting the socket circuit is 30 or 32A (and is wired in the cable featured in the piccy), do the following:
With a two pole voltage detector, ensure power to the outlet is off, then separate the hot wires. Put a terminal block on each.
Re-apply the power, ensuring the outlet is made safe from inadvertent contact.
Now, using the TPVD, both hot wires should be showing a voltage (216-252V) between ground and hot and between neutral and hot.
Will do....
Is there an RCD (GFCI) protecting the circuit?
In America, those kinds of switches/outlets are recognizable by a small red push button in the middle....and I have yet to see a switch/socket like that here. So a further description/explanation might help me
Going to do it tomorrow since we lost daylight today and our littlest kiddo has been here at the house with us all day.And as for the missing wire in the switch, did connecting it make the other lights work?
If not, the wire may not be related to the power loss. Is there another switch position that may have operated the same light? It could be a disconnected switchwire.
When we bought the house, the previous owner was in the middle of a remodel and was robbed while the house was empty. They stole all the copper in the house, cut some of the light fixtures and even removed some others completely. This switch and outlet seem to be the only two we have an issue with as all the sockets up stairs work, only 1 ceiling light works out of 3. (the 3rd hasnt been tested as of yet.
I would like to add, if there is any sparky in the NW (St Helens Merseyside Area) who can come do this for me for a reasonable price
